What is Being Made

The Hybrid Cowl is a versatile knitted accessory that combines a circular cowl section with two detachable scarf sections. The completed cowl measures 55 cm (21¾ inches) in circumference and 29 cm (11½ inches) in depth, while each scarf section measures 29 cm (11½ inches) wide and 56 cm (22 inches) long. This hybrid design allows the wearer to use the piece as a traditional cowl or as two separate scarves, offering multiple styling options from a single pattern.

Techniques Used

This intermediate-level project employs several key knitting techniques. The cowl begins as a seamless circular knit worked in the round using a circular needle, establishing the foundation of the design. After 80 rounds of patterned colorwork, the piece is divided to create two separate scarf sections that are worked flat in rows rather than in the round. The pattern incorporates a structured stripe sequence that repeats throughout the cowl section, providing visual interest and color variation. Yarn is joined and broken off at specific points to create the striped effect, and the pattern uses a combination of knit and purl stitches to build texture and dimension throughout the piece.

Stitches Used

The Hybrid Cowl utilizes fundamental knitting stitches arranged in a repeating pattern. The primary stitch pattern alternates between knit and purl stitches in varying sequences, such as P4, K2 and P5, K1 repeats, which create a ribbed texture. Garter stitch (knit every row) is worked at each edge of the flat scarf sections, consisting of 2 stitches on either side, providing a neat selvage and structural definition. The pattern is worked over 10-row repeats that establish the foundation for both the circular cowl section and the flat scarf sections, with the stitch pattern remaining consistent while the construction method transitions from rounds to rows.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

This pattern calls for two premium yarn types from Rowan, chosen for their complementary qualities. Rowan Felted Tweed is used in four colorways: Sulfur (220), French Mustard (216), Ciel (215), and one additional shade, with 50 grams required per color. Rowan Kidsilk Haze is used double throughout the project in two colorways: Shadow (653) and Eve Green (684), requiring 25 grams per color. The combination of these two yarns—one a sturdy wool blend and one a delicate mohair-silk blend—creates textural contrast and visual depth.

The project is worked on 4mm (US 6) circular needles no longer than 40 cm for the cowl section, and one pair of 4mm (US 6) straight needles for the flat scarf sections. The recommended tension is 24 stitches and 31 rows (or rounds) to 10 cm measured over the pattern using 4mm needles, ensuring proper fit and drape. Additional notions include a stitch marker and a stitch holder to manage the stitches when dividing the piece into separate scarf sections.
