Indian Summer Slouch and Mitts Hat Knitting Pattern

Project Overview

This advanced knitting pattern from Cascade Yarns, designed by Sheila Joynes, creates a coordinated set featuring a slouch hat and matching mitts. The Indian Summer design showcases a sophisticated colorwork approach using five distinct yarn colors to create visual interest and depth in both garments.

Hat Specifications

The slouch hat is available in three sizes: XS measuring 21 inches wide by 10.5 inches long, S measuring 21.75 inches wide by 10.5 inches long, and M/L measuring 22.5 inches wide by 10.5 inches long. The design features a relaxed, slouchy silhouette that drapes elegantly.

Mitts Specifications

The matching mitts measure 8 inches in diameter and 6.75 inches in length, providing a comfortable fit that coordinates with the hat design.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This pattern employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques appropriate for experienced knitters. The construction begins with a long tail cast on, followed by ribbed cuff work using knit and purl stitches to create elasticity and structure. The main body is worked primarily in stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric ideal for displaying colorwork.

The pattern incorporates increases using the make one (M1) technique to shape the garments and achieve proper fit. Decreases using knit two together (K2tog) and purl two together (P2tog) are employed for shaping and finishing. The pattern uses stranded colorwork techniques, alternating between the main color and multiple contrast colors to create patterned rounds throughout the design.

Construction is worked in the round using circular needles and double-pointed needles, which eliminates seaming and creates seamless, professional-looking garments. Stitch markers are used to track pattern repeats and maintain consistency throughout the knitting process.

Materials and Yarn

The pattern calls for Cascade Yarns Cascade 220, a premium yarn composed of 100% Highland Peruvian wool. Each skein provides 220 yards of yardage at 3.5 ounces. The color palette includes five coordinating shades: color #8555 in Black (main color, 1 skein), color #2413 in Red (contrast color 1, 1 skein), color #9668 in California Poppy (contrast color 2, 1 skein), color #7826 in Paprika (contrast color 3, 1 skein), and color #8509 in Grey (contrast color 4, 2 skeins).

Needles and Tools

The pattern requires US 5 (3.75 mm) circular needles measuring 16 inches in length and matching double-pointed needles (DPN) for working the crown shaping. Knitters should select needle size to achieve the specified gauge. Additional tools include a yarn needle for weaving in ends and seven stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and construction points.

Gauge and Finishing

Achieving proper gauge is essential for this pattern. The hat requires 26 stitches by 29 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch worked in the round, measured after blocking. The mitts require 24 stitches by 32 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch worked in the round, also measured after blocking. Proper gauge ensures the finished garments fit correctly and display the colorwork pattern as designed.

Pattern Structure

Both the hat and mitts begin with ribbed cuffs created through alternating knit and purl stitches in the main color and first contrast color. The ribbing provides stretch and helps the garments stay in place during wear. Following the ribbed sections, the body transitions into stockinette stitch with strategically placed increases to shape the garments. The colorwork pattern is introduced through stranded knitting, where multiple yarn colors are carried and worked in specific sequences to create the Indian Summer design.
