The Jasper Hat is a women's knitted hat designed to fit an average-sized adult woman's head with an approximate circumference of 48cm. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a structured hat featuring a ribbed brim that folds back and a textured cable-patterned crown, photographed in the Champagne colorway of Rowan Alpaca Classic yarn.
This pattern employs several essential knitting techniques suitable for intermediate crafters. The hat begins with a 2x2 ribbed brim that provides elasticity and structure, worked over 10cm in length. Cable work forms the primary design element of the crown, utilizing cable crossing techniques that require a cable needle to manipulate stitches. The pattern incorporates both front cable crosses and back cable crosses, as well as cable and purl combinations that create visual interest. Shaping is achieved through strategic decreasing using knit two together (K2tog) and purl two together (P2tog) reductions, which gradually reduce stitch counts from 170 stitches down to the final 16 stitches gathered at the crown. The finishing involves mattress stitch seaming or back stitch for joining the back seam, with the final 5cm of the brim intentionally reversed to create the fold-back effect.
The Jasper Hat is worked in Rowan Alpaca Classic, a luxury yarn composed of alpaca fiber. The pattern requires 2 balls of 25-gram weight (total 50 grams of yarn). Two pairs of needles are essential: 3.25mm (UK size 10 / US size 3) needles for the ribbed brim section, and 3.75mm (UK size 9 / US size 5) needles for the cable-patterned crown. A cable needle is required to execute the cable crossing stitches throughout the pattern. The tension is established at 35 stitches and 33 rows over 10 centimeters when measured over the cable pattern using the 3.75mm needles.
