Jo Sharp Anya Sweater

What Is Being Made

The Anya Sweater is a cropped women's sweater featuring detailed ribbed bands and bell-shaped sleeves. This design is suitable for intermediate knitters and comes in four size options (A, B, C, and D) to fit bust measurements from 80cm to 110cm. The sweater combines a fitted bodice with distinctive bell-shaped sleeves and structured ribbed detailing for a modern, tailored silhouette.

Techniques Used

The Anya Sweater is constructed using seamed construction with pieces worked flat on needles, then assembled together. This method allows for precise shaping and a professional finish. The sweater incorporates strategic decreasing and increasing techniques to create the bell-shaped sleeve silhouette and fitted bodice. Armhole shaping is achieved through cast-off decreases at the beginning of rows, while sleeve bell shaping uses staggered decreases worked at regular intervals across rows.

Stitches Used

  • 4x4 Ribbing: Used for the front ribbed band (worked for 12cm from the cast-on edge) and the upper sleeve ribbing (4cm section)
  • 2x2 Ribbing: Applied to the sleeve cuff ribbing (2cm section)
  • Stockinette Stitch (st st): Forms the main body fabric for the bodice and upper portions of the sweater
  • Decrease Stitches: K3tog (knit three together) and k3tog tbl (knit three together through back loops) create the bell-shaped sleeve shaping; decreases are worked at both ends of rows to taper the sleeves

Materials

The Anya Sweater is knitted with Jo Sharp Silkroad Aran Tweed yarn in 50g balls. Two colorway options are available: Posie and Beach. Yarn quantities range from 11 to 13 balls depending on the size selected (sizes A through D require 11, 12, 12, and 13 balls respectively). The pattern is worked on 5.00mm needles, which are appropriate for the Aran weight yarn and create the correct gauge for the finished garment measurements.

Construction Details

The sweater is worked in separate pieces: front, back, and two sleeves. The front begins with a cast-on of 82 to 110 stitches depending on size, starting with a 12cm ribbed band worked in 4x4 rib. The main bodice is then worked in stockinette stitch with armhole shaping created through sequential cast-offs. The sleeves feature a 2cm cuff in 2x2 rib followed by a 4cm stockinette section, then transition into the distinctive bell-shaped shaping with decreases worked every fourth row. The bodice length measures approximately 48 to 50cm from the beginning, with final neck shaping completed before seaming all pieces together for the finished garment.
