Jojoland Braided Swirl Tam

What Is Being Made

The Jojoland Braided Swirl Tam is a knitted hat featuring decorative cable braiding throughout the design. This tam is worked flat and finished to create a classic, structured hat shape with a finished diameter of 8½ to 9 inches. The pattern is rated at an Easy+ skill level, making it accessible to knitters with some foundational experience who are ready to work with cable techniques.

Techniques Used

This tam is constructed using cables as the primary decorative technique, combined with flat knitting construction. The pattern incorporates multiple cable crossing methods to create the braided swirl effect that defines the hat's visual appeal. Finishing techniques include options for both provisional cast on with Kitchener stitch closure or standard cast on with sewn seaming, allowing knitters to choose their preferred method based on skill level and preference.

Stitches Used

The pattern employs a range of fundamental and intermediate stitches. Cable stitches form the foundation of the design, including:

  • C4B (Cable 4 Back): Slip 2 stitches to cable needle, hold behind work, knit 2 stitches from left-hand needle, then knit the 2 stitches from cable needle
  • C4F (Cable 4 Front): Slip 2 stitches to cable needle, hold in front of work, knit 2 stitches from left-hand needle, then knit the 2 stitches from cable needle
  • C6B (Cable 6 Back): Slip 3 stitches to cable needle, hold behind work, knit 3 stitches from left-hand needle, then knit the 3 stitches from cable needle
  • C6F (Cable 6 Front): Slip 3 stitches to cable needle, hold in front of work, knit 3 stitches from left-hand needle, then knit the 3 stitches from cable needle

Additional stitches include k2tog (knit 2 together), ssk (slip, slip, knit), p2tog (purl 2 together), p2tog tbl (purl 2 together through back loop), and m1 (make one stitch) for shaping and stitch manipulation.

Materials and Yarn Options

The Jojoland Braided Swirl Tam offers flexibility in yarn selection, allowing knitters to choose from four different Jojoland yarn options, each requiring specific needle sizes:

  • Jojoland Fantasia: 100% Superwash wool, 145 yards total, worked on 5.5 mm/U.S. size 9 double point needles
  • Jojoland Rhythm: 100% wool, 220 yards total, worked on 4.5 mm/U.S. size 6 double point needles (requires 2 skeins)
  • Jojoland Tonic: 85% acrylic and 15% wool blend, 220 yards total, worked on 4.5 mm/U.S. size 6 double point needles
  • Jojoland Melody: 100% Superwash wool, 220 yards total, worked on 3.5 mm/U.S. size 4 double point needles

All yarn options are worked using double point needles, which are essential for the flat knitting construction and cable work required by this pattern. The variety of yarn weights and fiber contents allows knitters to customize the tam's appearance, drape, and care requirements based on their preferences and intended use.
