Juniper Moon Farm Aerlies Circular Shawl

What is Being Made

The Aerlies is a circular shawl designed by Adrienne Ku Findley, part of the Hesperides Collection from Juniper Moon Farm. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a finished shawl with a diameter of 60 inches (152 cm). The shawl is worked in the round, beginning from the center and expanding outward through multiple lace sections, making it an elegant accessory suitable for various occasions.

Construction and Techniques

This circular shawl employs a distinctive center-out construction method, where knitters begin at the shawl's center and work progressively outward in rounds. The design features multiple lace sections that flow seamlessly into one another, with increases strategically incorporated into the lace patterns themselves. This integration of increases into the stitch patterns creates a cohesive, organic growth pattern rather than relying on separate increase rounds.

Customization Option: The pattern is designed with flexibility in mind. Knitters can easily enlarge the finished shawl by working additional repeats of the final lace pattern, allowing for personalization based on preference or yarn availability.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns Used

  • Stockinette Stitch (St st): The foundational stitch used in sections of the shawl
  • Lace Patterns: Multiple charted lace sections (Chart B and Chart C) create openwork designs that define the shawl's aesthetic
  • Yarn Overs (YO): Essential for creating the lace openings and contributing to the shawl's delicate appearance
  • Decreases: Techniques including k2tog (knit two together), ssk (slip, slip, knit), and sk2p (slip 1, knit 2 together, pass slipped stitch over) are used to shape and balance the lace patterns
  • Marker Manipulation: The pattern includes specialized techniques such as moving markers one stitch right or left to maintain proper stitch alignment through the increasing rounds

Materials Required

Yarn: The pattern calls for 2 balls of Juniper Moon Farm Findley yarn in color #24 Snowy Skies. This yarn choice provides the appropriate weight and drape for the lace sections and overall shawl structure.

Needles: US5 (3.75 mm) needles are required, specifically including double-pointed needles (DPN) for working the center rounds and a 24-inch circular needle for the expanding rounds. Knitters should use the needle size that achieves the specified gauge.

Additional Notions: The pattern requires eighteen stitch markers plus one additional marker in a different style to indicate the end of each round. A tapestry needle is needed for weaving in ends. Blocking wires and pins are recommended to properly set the lace and achieve the finished measurements.

Gauge and Finished Dimensions

The pattern specifies two different gauges depending on the stitch being worked: 24 stitches and 32 rows equal 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch, while 20 stitches and 28 rows equal 4 inches (10 cm) in the lace pattern after blocking. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the 60-inch diameter finished measurement. The lace pattern gauge is measured post-blocking, reflecting the importance of blocking in finishing this shawl properly.
