Juniper Moon Farm Alloy Pullover by Pamela Wynne

What is Being Made

The Alloy pullover is a lightweight, fitted sweater from the Airy Collection, designed as a crew-neck pullover with a modern aesthetic. This knitted garment is available in five sizes ranging from XS to XL, with finished bust measurements from 34" to 50" (86 to 127 cm) and a consistent length of 22¼" (59 cm). The design is intended to be worn with at least 3" (7.5 cm) of positive ease for a comfortable, slightly relaxed fit.

Knitting Techniques Used

The Alloy pullover employs several intermediate knitting techniques to create its distinctive appearance. The garment is worked in the round using circular needles and double-pointed needles, which allows for seamless construction and continuous circular knitting. The design features strategic increases using both M1R (Make 1 Right) and M1L (Make 1 Left) techniques, which are directional increases that create clean, nearly invisible shaping throughout the sweater. The construction incorporates i-cord bind-offs, a decorative finishing method that creates a polished, professional edge. Decreases are worked using standard knitting methods including ssk (slip, slip, knit) and k2tog (knit two together) techniques.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The primary stitch used throughout the Alloy pullover is Stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic knit fabric with a refined appearance. The garment features a sophisticated Zig Zag Lace pattern that serves as a focal design element. This lace pattern is worked in the round over a multiple of 5 plus 4 stitches and repeats over 16 rows. The Zig Zag Lace pattern combines yarn overs with decreases to create an openwork design with a distinctive diagonal zigzag motif that flows around the body. The pattern alternates between lace rows and knit rows, with the lace rows creating the visual interest while the plain knit rows allow the fabric to rest and maintain structure. This combination of Stockinette stitch as the base fabric with the Zig Zag Lace pattern creates an airy, elegant aesthetic appropriate for the Airy Collection.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The Alloy pullover is designed to be knitted with Juniper Moon Farm Findley yarn in color #03 Graphite. The yardage requirements vary by size, with smaller sizes requiring 2 balls and larger sizes requiring 3 balls of this yarn. The pattern is worked on US 3 (3.25 mm) circular needles in a 24-inch length, along with a set of US 3 (3.25 mm) double-pointed needles for working the smaller circumference sections. The pattern specifies that knitters should choose needle size based on achieving the correct gauge. Additionally, US 2 (2.75 mm) double-pointed needles are required specifically for working the i-cord bind-offs, which use a smaller needle size to create a refined finishing detail. The recommended gauge for this project is 25 stitches and 32 rows per 4 inches (10 cm) in Stockinette stitch, which is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements.
