Evelina Shawl by Adrienne Ku Findley
What is Being Made
The Evelina shawl is a half-circle wrap designed to be worn around the shoulders and neck. This downloadable knitting pattern from the Hesperides Collection by Juniper Moon Farm creates a generous shawl measuring 60 inches wide and 30 inches long from neck to bottom edge. The shawl is worked from the top down, beginning at the neck and expanding outward to create the characteristic half-circle silhouette.
Construction and Design Approach
This shawl employs a top-down construction method, which allows the knitter to try on the garment as it grows and customize the finished size if desired. The pattern features repeating lace sections separated by simple increase rows that create the shaping necessary for the half-circle shape. The designer notes that the shawl can easily be made larger by working additional repeats of the final lace section, providing flexibility for different preferences and yarn quantities.
Lace Sections and Stitch Techniques
The Evelina shawl incorporates multiple lace sections worked from charted patterns. The pattern uses Chart C for the lace motifs, which are repeated across the width of the shawl as it expands. Between lace sections, simple increase rows are worked to maintain proper shaping. The lace pattern is interspersed with stockinette stitch sections and garter stitch edging to frame the delicate openwork.
Key stitches and techniques used throughout the pattern include:
- Yarn overs (YO) – creates the openwork characteristic of lace
- Knit increases (kfb) – knitting into the front and back of a stitch to add stitches
- Decreases (k2tog, ssk, sk2p) – used to balance yarn overs and shape the lace motifs
- Stockinette stitch (St st) – smooth knit fabric used in sections between lace
- Garter stitch – knit every row, used for the edge borders
- Stitch markers – the pattern calls for twenty-one stitch markers to help track pattern repeats across the expanding width
Finishing Details
The shawl is completed with a knitted-on border, which is worked directly from the live stitches along the bottom edge. This method creates a seamless, professional finish. The pattern recommends blocking with blocking wires and pins to even out the lace and achieve the final measurements and drape. After blocking, the lace pattern achieves a gauge of 20 stitches and 28 rows per 4 inches.
Yarn and Needles
The Evelina shawl is designed to be knitted with Juniper Moon Farm Findley yarn in the colorway #25 Buckwheat. Only one ball of yarn is required to complete the shawl as written. The pattern is worked on US 5 (3.75 mm) long circular needles, which are used for knitting flat. Circular needles are ideal for this construction method as they accommodate the expanding stitch count while working back and forth in rows.
Gauge and Sizing
Achieving the correct gauge is important for this pattern. In stockinette stitch, the target gauge is 24 stitches and 32 rows over 4 inches before blocking. In the lace pattern, the gauge is 20 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches after blocking. Blocking is recommended to open up the lace and achieve the finished measurements of 60 inches wide by 30 inches long.
