Juniper Moon Farm Smoosh Hat, Shoulder Cozy & Beatrix Collection

What Is Being Made

The Smoosh collection by Lynette Meek includes two coordinating accessories: a structured bucket-style hat and a matching shoulder cozy (cowl). Both pieces are designed to be knitted from the same yarn in a complementary set, though they can be made individually. The hat features a distinctive folded brim detail that creates dimensional shaping, while the shoulder cozy provides a versatile layering piece for the neck and shoulders.

Hat Specifications

Finished Measurements: The hat is designed with a 20"/50cm head circumference, a brim measuring approximately 24"/61cm around, and a depth of approximately 7"/18cm. The bucket silhouette is achieved through strategic shaping and the signature fold detail that helps maintain the hat's structured form.

Shoulder Cozy Specifications

Finished Measurements: The cozy measures approximately 9"/23cm deep with a neck opening of 17"/43cm around and an outside edge circumference of approximately 66"/167.5cm, creating a generous draped shoulder piece.

Knitting Techniques

  • Worked in the Round: Both the hat and cozy are primarily constructed using circular needles worked in the round, creating seamless pieces with continuous spiraling rows.
  • Top-Down Construction: The hat is knitted from the top down, beginning at the crown and working toward the brim, allowing for easy customization of fit during the knitting process.
  • Seamless Construction: The in-the-round technique eliminates the need for seaming, resulting in smooth, finished edges.
  • Fold Detail Technique: A specialized dimensional fold is incorporated into the hat design. This fold uses reverse stockinette stitch to create a visual and textural change point. The fold is created by picking up purl bumps from three rows below and knitting them together with live stitches, adding structural interest and helping the hat maintain its bucket shape.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette Stitch (St st): The primary stitch for the hat body and cozy, creating a smooth, classic fabric.
  • Reverse Stockinette Stitch: Used in the fold detail section to create contrast and dimensional texture.
  • Ribbing (K1, P1): Applied in the hat's ribbed band section for 6 rounds, providing elasticity and a finished edge.
  • Decreases: K2tog (knit two together) decreases are used strategically throughout the crown shaping, progressively reducing stitch counts from 84 sts to 64 sts in the final crown rounds.
  • Increases: M1 (make one) increases are incorporated in the crown section to create the fold detail shaping.

Materials and Tools

Yarn: Juniper Moon Farm Beatrix yarn in color 01 Sky. The hat requires 2 x 50g balls, while the cozy requires additional yardage. A combined total of 3 balls of Beatrix yarn is sufficient to complete both projects together.

Needles: The pattern utilizes multiple needle sizes to create different fabric densities:

  • Size US 9 (5.5mm) circular needles, 16"/40cm long (for ribbed sections and initial cozy work)
  • Size US 10 (6mm) circular needles in both 16"/40cm and 32"/80cm lengths (for main body sections)
  • Size US 10 (6mm) double-pointed needles (for crown decreases)
  • Size US 9 (5.5mm) knitting needles (for cozy ribbing)

Notions and Gauge: The pattern requires stitch markers for tracking round beginnings and pattern repeats, and 5 buttons measuring ¾"/20mm for the cozy. Gauge is established at 14 stitches = 4"/10cm in stockinette stitch using US 10 (6mm) needles.

Construction Overview

The hat begins with cast-on stitches worked in the round from the crown downward. Early rounds establish the crown shaping through strategic decreases, reducing from an initial stitch count through multiple decrease rounds. The pattern then transitions to stockinette stitch for the main hat body, worked over 26 rounds. The
