Kenna Kid Sweater and Headband by Ursula McGrath

What is Being Made

Kenna is a child's pullover sweater available in both girl's and boy's versions, designed as part of the Rainbow Summer Collection. The pattern includes a coordinating headband made from leftover yarn. The sweater is sized to fit children ages 2–11 years, with chest measurements ranging from 22 to 30 inches (56 to 76 cm). Girl's sweater lengths range from 15 to 21 inches (38 to 53 cm), while boy's sweater lengths range from 14 to 20 inches (35 to 51 cm). Sleeve length varies from 9 to 15 inches (23 to 38 cm) depending on size.

Techniques Used

Kenna is constructed using bottom-up seamed construction, meaning the sweater pieces are knitted from the bottom edge upward and then sewn together. The garment is worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, allowing for traditional row-by-row shaping. Striped colorwork is a key design element, created by alternating between two yarn colors throughout the pattern. Shoulder shaping is accomplished through strategic cast-offs and decreases, while the neckline is shaped through decreases worked at the neck edge on successive rows. The pattern includes a separate neckband that is worked from stitches held on a stitch holder.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques

The pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques including stockinette stitch as the primary fabric base. Shaping is achieved through knit two together (wk2tog) decreases at the neck and shoulder edges to create fitted armholes and necklines. Cast-offs are used strategically to shape shoulders and establish the garment's structure. The striped pattern is maintained throughout the body and sleeves by working rows in alternating colors, creating horizontal color bands across the finished sweater.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

For the Girl's Sweater: The pattern calls for Juniper Moon Farm NIMBUS PAINTS in color 602 Atlantis Snowstorm (2–3 skeins of 100g depending on size) as the primary color, and Juniper Moon Farm NIMBUS in color 08 Goldspire (1–2 skeins of 100g) as the secondary color for stripes.

For the Boy's Sweater: The pattern uses Juniper Moon Farm NIMBUS in color 10 High Tide (2–3 skeins of 100g depending on size) as the main color, paired with Juniper Moon Farm NIMBUS PAINTS in color 604 Mendocino at Dusk (1 skein of 100g) for striping.

For the Headband: Leftover yarn from the girl's sweater is used to create a coordinating accessory.

Needles: A pair of US 10½ (6.5mm) knitting needles is required to work the pattern at the appropriate gauge.
