Juniper Moon Farm Ellie Kid Sweater

What is Being Made

Ellie is a children's pullover sweater from the Rainbow Summer Collection, designed by Ursula McGrath. This garment is available in both girl's and boy's versions with slightly different finished lengths. The sweater is sized to fit children aged 2–11 years, with chest measurements ranging from 22 to 30 inches (56 to 76 centimeters). The finished widths span 24 to 32 inches (61 to 81 centimeters), and length options accommodate both girl's versions (15 to 21 inches / 38 to 53 centimeters) and boy's versions (14 to 20 inches / 35 to 51 centimeters). Sleeve length ranges from 9 to 15 inches (23 to 38 centimeters) depending on size.

Techniques Used

Ellie is constructed using a bottom-up seamed method, meaning the back and front pieces are knitted separately from the lower edge upward, then assembled together with seams. The sweater features horizontal stripes created by changing yarn colors at specific intervals throughout the pattern. All pieces are worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, allowing for straightforward color transitions and stripe placement. The construction includes shaped shoulders and a neck opening, with decreases worked at strategic points to create proper garment shaping and fit.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch throughout Ellie is stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric ideal for children's garments. The pattern also incorporates double moss stitch (abbreviated as Db.ms.st. in the instructions), a textured stitch that adds visual interest and subtle dimension to the striped sections. Additionally, the pattern includes yarn forward and purl two together (yfrn, P2tog) sequences, which create decorative eyelet details. Standard shaping techniques such as knit two together (k2tog) decreases are used to shape the neckline and shoulders, ensuring proper fit and garment structure.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

For the girl's sweater version, the pattern calls for Juniper Moon Farm Cirrus yarn in four colors: Porcelain (color 01), Pink Lemonade (color 11), Poppy (color 12), and Buttermilk (color 05). Each color requires one 100-gram ball, except Poppy which may require up to two balls depending on the child's size. For the boy's sweater version, only Juniper Moon Farm Cirrus in Starshine (color 02) is needed, with quantities ranging from two to three 100-gram balls based on the selected size.

Knitting needles required include US 3 (3.25mm) needles for ribbing and edging work, and US 6 (4mm) needles for the main body of the sweater. The gauge is established at 22 stitches and 30 rows equaling 4 inches (10 centimeters) over stockinette stitch using the US 6 (4mm) needles, which is essential for achieving proper fit and finished measurements.
