Lana Grossa Hat & Mittens in Bingo Mélange

Project Overview

The Hat & Mittens in Bingo Mélange is Design 09 from the Merino Edition collection by Lana Grossa. This coordinated set features a classic knitted hat and matching pair of mittens, both constructed using seamless, bottom-up techniques worked in the round. The set is available in two sizes to accommodate different head and hand measurements.

Hat Details

The hat measures approximately 24 (26.5) cm wide and 23.5 cm long, depending on size selection. The hat is worked seamlessly in the round using double-pointed needles, beginning from the cast-on edge and progressing upward to the crown. The construction employs a ribbed cuff pattern followed by stockinette stitch in the body, with strategic decreases worked at the crown to shape the top of the hat. The ribbed pattern uses a K2, P2 repeat to create an elastic, fitted cuff that sits comfortably on the head.

Mittens Details

Each mitten measures approximately 10 (11) cm wide and 25 (26.5) cm long. The mittens are constructed seamlessly in the round using the same double-pointed needle technique as the hat. The cuff begins with a ribbed pattern worked for 7 cm, providing stretch and comfort at the wrist. The hand section is worked in stockinette stitch for 6 cm before the thumb gusset is introduced. The thumb gusset is created by placing stitches on a holder and casting on new stitches to bridge the gap, allowing the thumb to be worked separately. After the thumb gusset section, the mitten continues in stockinette stitch until reaching the appropriate length, then decreases are worked in a coordinated pattern across all four needles to close the top of the mitten.

Techniques and Stitches

  • Construction Method: Seamless, worked in the round using double-pointed needles
  • Approach: Bottom-up construction, beginning at the cuff and progressing toward the crown or top
  • Primary Stitch: Stockinette stitch (knit every round), which creates a smooth, classic fabric
  • Ribbed Pattern: K2, P2 ribbing used for the cuffs of both hat and mittens to provide elasticity and a fitted finish
  • Decreases: K2tog (knit two together) and SKP (slip, knit, pass slipped stitch over) decreases used strategically to shape the crown of the hat and close the tops of the mittens
  • Thumb Gusset: Increases and holder stitches used to create a shaped thumb opening in the mittens

Materials and Yarn Specifications

This project requires 200 grams of Lana Grossa Bingo Mélange yarn, which is composed of 100% pure wool. The yarn is available at a yardage of 80 meters per 50 grams. The specified colorway for this design is Mint Mélange (color 237). Two sets of double-pointed needles are required: size 4.5 mm needles for working the ribbed cuffs and size 5 mm needles for working the stockinette stitch sections of the hat and mittens.

Gauge Information

Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper fit. When working in stockinette stitch on the larger 5 mm needles, the gauge is 16.5 stitches and 24 rounds over a 10 x 10 cm swatch. When working on the smaller 4.5 mm needles, the gauge is 18 stitches and 26 rounds over a 10 x 10 cm swatch. These different gauges reflect the tighter tension typically achieved with smaller needles and the looser fabric created with larger needles.

Size Options

Instructions are provided for two sizes. The smaller size is presented as the primary instructions, with the larger size measurements given in parentheses throughout the pattern. When only one figure is provided without parentheses, that measurement applies to both sizes. This allows knitters to customize the fit of both the hat and mittens to their specific measurements.
