Lana Grossa Poncho in Cool Wool Big

What is Being Made

This is a knitted poncho design from Lana Grossa's Merino Edition collection. The finished poncho measures approximately 54 cm wide and 72.5 cm long, creating a versatile layering piece that is folded and seamed at the shoulder for a comfortable fit.

Techniques Used

The poncho is constructed using a bottom-up knitting method, beginning with a cast-on of 96 stitches and building the piece from the lower edge upward. The construction involves cable work integrated throughout the design, with two distinct cable panels positioned strategically across the width of the piece. The finished poncho is seamed at the shoulder after knitting and blocking are complete. The piece is folded in half along a marked line and then sewn together to create the shoulder seam.

Stitches Used

  • Garter Stitch: Created by knitting every row, used for edge details and structural elements
  • Reverse Stockinette Stitch: Formed by purling on right-side rows and knitting on wrong-side rows, creating the main textured background of the poncho
  • Cable Panels: Two separate cable designs are incorporated—Cable Chart A worked over 13 stitches (measuring 6 cm wide) and Cable Chart B worked over 24 stitches (measuring 9 cm wide). These cables are repeated according to a 20-row pattern repeat throughout the length of the piece

Materials

The poncho requires 400 grams of Lana Grossa Cool Wool Big yarn, which is composed of 100% pure wool. This yarn has a yardage of 120 meters per 50-gram ball. The specified colorway is Medium Grey (color 928). Knitting is worked on size 7 mm needles, and a cable needle is required for manipulating stitches during cable work. The gauge is established at 15 stitches and 22 rows equaling 10 by 10 centimeters in reverse stockinette stitch on size 7 mm needles.

Construction Details

The poncho is worked as a single rectangular piece that measures approximately 140 centimeters from cast-on to bind-off. Cable panels are positioned at both edges and throughout the center, with reverse stockinette stitch filling the spaces between them. After the piece reaches its full length, it is bound off, then pinned to measurements and blocked to shape. The piece is folded in half along a marked line on the schematic, and the shoulder seam is sewn to complete the garment.
