Lang Men's Sweater

What is Being Made

This is a classic men's pullover sweater featuring prominent cable stitch patterning throughout the garment. The sweater is designed in multiple sizes to accommodate various body measurements, with finished chest widths ranging from 38 cm to 62 cm. The design combines textured cable elements with stockinette stitch sections, creating visual interest and depth in the finished piece.

Construction Method and Techniques

The Lang Men's Sweater is constructed using a bottom-up approach, meaning you begin knitting from the lower edge of the garment and work upward toward the shoulders and neckline. The sweater is worked flat on straight needles, with pieces created as individual flat panels rather than in the round. Once all pieces are completed, they are joined together using seaming techniques, which creates a professional, finished appearance along the side seams and shoulder seams.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The primary stitch pattern features cable stitches, which are created by crossing groups of stitches over one another using a cable needle. The pattern includes two main cable crossing variations:

  • A 2-over-2 cable cross: Two stitches are placed on a cable needle and held at the back of the work, two stitches are knitted, then the stitches from the cable needle are knitted
  • A 3-over-3 cable cross: Three stitches are placed on a cable needle and held at the back of the work, three stitches are knitted, then the stitches from the cable needle are knitted

These cable crosses are arranged in repeating patterns with a 10-stitch and 25-stitch rapport (repeat unit), creating structured, dimensional texture. The cables are worked against a background of stockinette stitch (knit on right-side rows, purl on wrong-side rows) and reverse stockinette stitch, which provides contrast and allows the cable patterns to stand out prominently.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

This pattern is designed for use with Lang Yarns products. The schematic indicates specific yardage and weight requirements that vary by size. Knitters will need appropriate knitting needles sized to achieve the correct gauge with their chosen yarn. The pattern documentation uses metric measurements throughout (all sizes given in centimeters), and includes detailed schematics showing finished dimensions for each size option.

Pattern Details and Sizing

The sweater is available in multiple size options with finished chest measurements of 38 cm, 42 cm, 46 cm, 50 cm, 54 cm, 58 cm, and 62 cm. Each size includes proportional adjustments for sleeve length, body length, and armhole depth. The pattern provides complete instructions in multiple languages and includes charted stitch patterns for easy reference during knitting.
