Lang PTO45-01 Vest: Knitted Waistcoat in Merino Wool

What is Being Made

The Lang PTO45-01 is a sleeveless knitted vest (waistcoat) designed in two size ranges: S–M and L–XL. The finished garment features a V-neckline with a shaped point at center front, finished armholes, and seamed side construction. The vest offers a classic, tailored silhouette suitable for layering, with bust measurements of 45¾" (116 cm) for size S–M and 50½" (128 cm) for size L–XL, and an overall length of 24½" (62 cm).

Construction Techniques

This vest is constructed using a bottom-up, seamed approach, with pieces worked flat on straight needles before assembly. The main body sections are knitted separately and then joined at the shoulder and side seams. The finishing details employ circular needles for in-the-round construction, which is used to add the neckband and armhole edgings after the primary garment pieces are complete.

The neckband is worked in the round using a short circular needle, with strategic decreases placed at the center front to create and maintain the V-neck shaping. The decreases are worked every round over 4 stitches using a k2tog and slip-stitch-knit-psso (sl1, k1, psso) combination, ensuring a symmetrical point. The armhole edgings are similarly worked in the round, providing a finished, professional appearance.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch pattern employed throughout this vest is K2:P2 rib, a classic knit-two, purl-two ribbing worked over an even number of stitches. Ribbing provides elasticity and structure, making it ideal for fitted garments. The rib stitch is used for the main body fabric as well as for the neckband and armhole edgings, creating visual and textural consistency.

Decreases are executed using standard decrease techniques: k2tog (knit two together) and sl1, k1, psso (slip one stitch, knit one, pass slipped stitch over), which are worked at the V-neck center front to shape the neckline point. These decreases are paired and balanced for symmetry.

Materials and Tools

The vest is knitted in LANGYARNS CLOUD, a premium blend of virgin wool (merino extrafine, super-wash, mulesing-free) and nylon. This yarn composition provides softness, durability, and easy care. The yardage requirement is 300 grams (approximately 3 balls) for sizes S–M and 400 grams (approximately 4 balls) for sizes L–XL in the colorway bright chestnut-petrol 1077.0012 or bright 1077.0008.

The pattern specifies ADDI knitting needles in US size 10 (6mm) for the main fabric and US size 10.5 (7mm) as an alternative. A short circular needle in US size 10 (6mm) is required for working the neckband and armhole edgings in the round. The use of circular needles for finishing ensures smooth, even stitches on these visible edges.

Finishing Details

Finishing is accomplished through several key steps: shoulder seams are closed first to establish the neckline opening, followed by side seams sewn just half a stitch in from the edge for a neat, professional seam line. The neckband is picked up around the entire neck opening (114 stitches for S–M, 122 stitches for L–XL) and worked in K2:P2 rib with decreases at the center front point, then loosely bound off in pattern. Armhole edgings are similarly picked up (76 stitches for S–M, 80 stitches for L–XL per armhole), worked in rib for 2 rounds, and bound off. All ends are woven in, and the finished vest may be blocked as desired.
