Nevis Top in Berroco Liana

What is Being Made

The Nevis Top is an intermediate-level knitted garment designed by Amy Christoffers from Berroco Book #416. This pullover top features a fitted construction with finished bust measurements ranging from 34 inches to 63 inches across eight size options, with corresponding lengths from 19 inches to 24¾ inches. The pattern is designed with 4–8 inches of positive ease for a comfortable fit.

Construction Technique

The Nevis Top employs a modern seamless construction method worked primarily in the round. The body is knitted in the round from the cast-on edge up to the underarms, where it is then divided for separate back and front sections. The sleeves are similarly constructed in the round to the underarms before being joined to the body. The yoke is worked in the round with short-row shaping used to create the neckline, eliminating the need for traditional seaming and providing a polished, professional finish.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns Used

The Nevis Top incorporates several fundamental knitting stitches and stitch patterns:

  • Stockinette Stitch (St st) — The primary fabric stitch, creating a smooth, classic knit appearance
  • RibbingK1, p1 ribbing is used for the initial 3 rounds at the cast-on edge for elasticity and structure
  • Alternating Knit and Purl Rounds — Textured rounds worked as knit followed by purl create visual interest in the lower body section
  • 2x2 RibbingK2, p2 ribbing is incorporated in the pattern repeat for additional textural definition
  • Increases and DecreasesK2tog (knit two together) decreases and M1 (make one) increases are used for shaping
  • Short-Row Shaping — Applied to the yoke and neckline for custom fit and neckline contouring

Materials: Yarn and Needles

Yarn: The Nevis Top is designed to be knitted with Berroco Liana, a yarn weight that uses 50 grams per hank. The pattern calls for 5 to 12 hanks depending on the size selected, with the sample shown in size 46 inches knitted in colorway #8273 Agave.

Needles and Notions: The pattern requires U.S. size 6 (4.00 mm) circular needles in both 29-inch and 16-inch lengths for working the body and sleeves in the round. A set of double-pointed needles in the same size is needed for smaller circumference sections. Additional notions include four stitch markers (with one in a contrasting color to mark the beginning of round) and waste yarn for holding stitches during construction.

Gauge

The recommended gauge for the Nevis Top is 21 stitches and 29 rows over 4 inches when worked in Stockinette Stitch. Achieving proper gauge is essential for accurate finished measurements and is strongly recommended before beginning the project.
