Noro Diamond Rib Hat

What is Being Made

The Noro Diamond Rib Hat is a seamless, worked-in-the-round knitted hat designed for multiple sizes: child, adult small, adult medium, and adult large. The finished brim circumference ranges from 17½ inches (44.5cm) for the child size to 22½ inches (57cm) for the adult large size, with corresponding length measurements of 5½ to 9 inches (14 to 23cm) when the brim is folded 2 inches (5cm). This intermediate-level project creates a classic hat silhouette with a folded brim detail.

Techniques Used

This hat is constructed using several key knitting techniques that define its construction and appearance:

  • Seamless, worked-in-the-round construction: The entire hat is knitted in continuous rounds using circular needles and double-pointed needles, eliminating the need for seaming and creating a smooth, professional finish.
  • Cable techniques: Diamond rib cable patterns are incorporated throughout the design, adding textural interest and visual depth to the finished hat.
  • Increases and decreases: Strategic increases (such as knit in front and back of stitch, or make one techniques) and decreases (knit 2 together, purl 2 together, slip-slip-knit) are used to shape the hat and create the diamond rib pattern.
  • Stitch marker placement: Markers help track pattern repeats and shaping throughout the rounds.

Stitches Used

The Noro Diamond Rib Hat employs a variety of fundamental and intermediate knitting stitches:

  • Knit and purl stitches: The foundation of the diamond rib pattern, creating the textured surface.
  • Cable stitches: Worked with a cable needle to create the distinctive diamond rib design that gives the hat its name and visual character.
  • Increases: Make one (M1) stitches worked knitwise and purlwise to add stitches where needed for shaping.
  • Decreases: Slip-slip-knit (SSK) and knit 2 together (K2tog) decreases, as well as purl 2 together (P2tog), to shape the crown of the hat.
  • Selvage stitches: Edge stitches that facilitate clean finishing.

Materials

The Noro Diamond Rib Hat is designed to be knitted with premium materials that create a luxurious finished garment:

  • Yarn: One 100-gram skein of Noro Silk Garden Sock in colorway #s84. This yarn choice provides the appropriate weight and yardage for the hat across all sizes.
  • Needles: One size US 4/3.5mm circular needle measuring 16 inches (40cm) long for the main body of the hat, paired with one set of five size US 4/3.5mm double-pointed needles for the crown shaping when stitches become too few for the circular needle.
  • Notions: Stitch markers to track pattern repeats and shaping, and a cable needle for executing the cable stitches that create the diamond rib texture.

This intermediate-level project combines classic cable knitting techniques with seamless construction to create a versatile, well-fitting hat suitable for children and adults in multiple sizes.
