Noro Marled Cowl

What Is Being Made

The Noro Marled Cowl is a seamless, tubular neck accessory knitted in the round. This cowl features a finished circumference of 30 inches (76 centimeters) and a width of 14 inches (35.5 centimeters), making it a generous, versatile piece suitable for layering or wearing as a statement accessory. The project is rated as easy difficulty, making it accessible to knitters with basic skills.

Techniques Used

This cowl is constructed using seamless, in-the-round knitting, which eliminates the need for seaming and creates a continuous, professional-looking finished piece. The pattern employs several fundamental knitting techniques to shape and structure the garment:

  • Increases are worked to add stitches to the row, using methods such as knitting in the front and back of a stitch or making one stitch by lifting the strand between stitches
  • Decreases reduce the number of stitches in a row through techniques like knitting two stitches together or purling two stitches together
  • Slip, slip, knit decreases are used to create neat, directional decreases by slipping two stitches knitwise and then knitting them together
  • Stitch markers are placed on the needle to denote pattern repeats and the beginning of rounds, helping maintain proper stitch placement throughout the project

Stitches Used

The Noro Marled Cowl is worked primarily in honeycomb pattern stitch, which creates a textured, dimensional fabric with visual interest. The pattern combines knit and purl stitches to form the characteristic honeycomb texture. Additional stitch techniques incorporated include:

  • Knit stitches worked knitwise, inserting the needle as if to knit
  • Purl stitches worked purlwise, inserting the needle as if to purl
  • Make one increases (both knit and purl variations) for seamless stitch additions
  • Decrease stitches including knit two together and purl two stitches together for shaping

The pattern is worked from a chart that uses symbols to indicate stitch placement, with shaded spaces representing "no stitch" areas where stitches have been previously decreased or not yet made.

Materials

The Noro Marled Cowl requires three 50-gram balls of Noro Silk Garden in colorway #423 (designated as yarn A) and three 50-gram skeins of Noro Silk Garden Solo in colorway #8 (designated as yarn B). These two yarns are held together throughout the project to create the marled effect and achieve the proper gauge. The pattern calls for one US size 11 (8 millimeter) circular needle measuring 24 inches (60 centimeters) in length, sized to obtain the correct gauge. A stitch marker is also required to track rounds and pattern repeats.

Gauge

The pattern specifies a gauge of 7 stitches to 3 inches (7.5 centimeters) and 22 rounds to 4 inches (10 centimeters) when worked over the honeycomb pattern stitch using a US size 11 (8 millimeter) needle with two strands of yarn held together. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for the finished cowl to measure the specified dimensions.
