What Is Being Made

This is a knitted patchwork scarf designed by Martin Storey, constructed from multiple small squares that are joined together to create a long, rectangular finished piece. The completed scarf measures approximately 17 cm (6¾ inches) in width by 312 cm (122¾ inches) in length, making it a generous accessory suitable for wrapping and styling.

Construction Method and Technique

The scarf is created using a modular patchwork approach, where individual squares are knitted separately and then strategically joined together. The pattern involves working multiple bands of three squares each, with these bands repeated throughout the project. Squares are connected by picking up and knitting stitches along the row-end edges of adjacent completed squares, creating a seamless integration between modules. This technique allows crafters to build the scarf progressively while managing yarn usage efficiently across the design.

The basic square construction begins with a foundation row and uses a central marked stitch as a focal point for decreasing. Decreases are worked symmetrically on either side of this marked center stitch across 20 rows, gradually reducing the square from 25 stitches down to a single remaining stitch. This creates a shaped, tapered square rather than a traditional flat square, contributing to the scarf's distinctive patchwork aesthetic.

Stitches Used

Yarn and Materials

The scarf combines two distinct Rowan yarns to create visual interest and varied texture throughout the patchwork design. Rowan Felted Tweed is used in three colorways: Maritime (167), Seasalter (178), and Seafarer (170), with 50 grams allocated per color. Rowan Kidsilk Haze is featured in two colorways: Jelly (597) and Alhambra (666), with 25 grams per color. This combination of a heavier wool-based yarn with a delicate, lacelike mohair blend creates dynamic contrast in both weight and drape.

The project is worked on 3¾mm (US 5) needles, which are sized appropriately for the yarn combination used. A safety pin is required as an extra to hold stitches temporarily during the modular construction process.

Tension and Difficulty

The scarf is rated as intermediate difficulty, suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle modular construction techniques. The tension is based on stockinette stitch at 24 stitches and 32 rows over 10 centimeters using the specified needles and yarn. Achieving proper tension is important for ensuring that individual squares measure correctly at 17 centimeters and that the final scarf dimensions are accurate.

Finishing

The completed patchwork scarf requires pressing according to standard finishing instructions to set the stitches and even out the fabric. This finishing step helps integrate the individual squares visually and ensures the scarf drapes smoothly.
