Rowan Light Knitted Sweater by Georgia Farrell

What is Being Made

The Rowan Light is an intermediate-level knitted sweater designed by Georgia Farrell. This garment is available in nine sizes ranging from 28-30 inches to 60-62 inches bust measurement, with actual finished bust measurements from 35½ inches to 67¾ inches. The sweater features a structured construction with separate front and back pieces, including a divided front neck opening and a neckband finish.

Knitting Techniques Used

This design employs several key knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate crafters. The garment uses charted colorwork patterns for both the back and front pieces, requiring knitters to follow stitch-by-stitch instructions from provided charts. The pattern incorporates waist and shoulder shaping through strategic decreases worked at specific intervals. Neck shaping is achieved through decreasing stitches at the neck edge on alternating rows and every fourth row, creating a fitted neckline. The sweater also features a ribbed neckband worked separately and attached to the finished garment.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The foundational stitch structure includes knit and purl stitches worked in combination to create texture and pattern definition. The ribbing used for the neckband is worked in a 1x1 rib pattern (alternating single knit and purl stitches), which provides elasticity and a professional finish. The pattern specifies a slip stitch purlwise abbreviation (sl 1P), indicating that slipped stitches are used, likely for edge finishing or pattern continuity. The main body features charted colorwork patterns that require reading and following visual stitch maps for accurate color placement and stitch selection.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The Rowan Light is worked using a combination of two distinct yarn types held together throughout most of the garment. Kidsilk Haze (25-gram balls) is used in two colorways: Eve Green (color 684) and Majestic (color 589). Felted Tweed (50-gram balls) is used in two colorways: Sulfur (color 220) and Aluminium (color 210). The yarn quantities vary by size, with Kidsilk Haze Eve Green ranging from 3 to 6 balls and Felted Tweed Sulfur ranging from 4 to 8 balls depending on the finished garment size.

The pattern requires two pairs of needles in different sizes. 4mm (US size 6) needles are used for the ribbed neckband and initial cast-on rows, while 4½mm (US size 7) needles are used for the main body pattern work. The specified tension is 18 stitches and 27 rows to 10 centimeters when measured over the charted pattern using 4½mm needles with one strand each of Kidsilk Haze and Felted Tweed held together.

Construction Overview

The sweater is constructed in separate pieces. The back piece is cast on using 4mm needles with yarns C and D (Kidsilk Haze Majestic and Felted Tweed Aluminium) held together, beginning with a 1x1 ribbed edging before switching to 4½mm needles and the charted pattern. The front follows the same basic construction but uses a different chart and includes a divided neck opening. Shoulder shaping is worked symmetrically on both sides, while neck shaping involves decreasing at the neck edge on alternating rows initially, then transitioning to every fourth row for a gradual, fitted neckline. A separate neckband is worked and attached to complete the garment.
