Rowan Shoreditch Hat by Georgia Farrell

What is Being Made

The Shoreditch Hat is an advanced-level knitted hat designed to fit an average adult head. This is a structured, tailored hat featuring a distinctive double-thickness folded brim and a fitted crown, created using traditional knitting techniques and stitch patterns.

Construction and Techniques

The hat is constructed in the round using circular or double-pointed needles, beginning with a cast-on of 112 stitches. The design employs a sophisticated double brim technique where the cast-on edge is folded under and joined to live stitches, creating a finished, reinforced brim with professional structure. This folding and joining method requires careful attention and contributes to the advanced skill level of this pattern.

The crown shaping is worked using decreases to form a fitted top. The pattern offers flexibility in needle choice, allowing knitters to work with either a set of four double-pointed needles or short circular needles (no more than 40 cm long), with an optional longer circular needle available for crown shaping work.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch pattern is cable rib, which forms the foundation of the hat's visual design. This pattern repeats over six rounds and alternates between knit and purl stitches with cable twists:

  • Rounds 1–4: K2, *P2, K2* repeating to the end
  • Round 5: C2F (cable 2 front), *P2, C2F* repeating to the end
  • Round 6: K2, *P2, K2* repeating to the end

The cable rib pattern continues throughout the brim section until the specified length is reached. The crown is worked in reverse stockinette stitch, which provides textural contrast and is measured at a tension of 23 stitches and 31 rows over 10 centimeters.

Materials and Yarn

The Shoreditch Hat is designed for Rowan Alpaca Classic yarn, available in three colorways:

  • Colourway 1: Feather Grey Melange 101 (2 x 25gm)
  • Colourway 2: Dark Burgundy 122 (2 x 25gm)
  • Colourway 3: Ice Blue 131 (2 x 25gm)

Each colorway requires 50 grams of yarn total. Alpaca Classic is a luxurious natural fiber that provides softness and drape suitable for a refined hat design.

Needles

The pattern requires two sets of needles in different sizes to accommodate the different tension requirements of the brim and crown sections:

  • For the brim: Set of 4 double-pointed 3¼mm (US 3) needles, or 3¼mm (US 3) circular needle no more than 40 cm long
  • For the crown: Set of 4 double-pointed 3¾mm (US 5) needles, or 3¾mm (US 5) circular needle no more than 40 cm long (with an optional longer 3¾mm circular needle for shaping)

Tension and Fit

Achieving correct tension is essential for this advanced pattern. The brim section is worked at 26 stitches and 33 rows to 10 centimeters using 3¾mm needles, while the crown reverse stockinette is worked at 23 stitches and 31 rows to 10 centimeters using the same needle size. The hat is sized as one size to fit an average adult head, with specific measurements provided for brim depth (15 cm) and crown depth (7.5 cm from the top of the double brim).
