What Is Being Made

The Rowan Buddy is a yoke-style baby sweater designed for infants aged 0–12 months. This downloadable knitting pattern produces a fitted pullover with a seamless construction, featuring a decorative yoke worked from the neckline down. The sweater is available in four sizes with actual chest measurements ranging from 51.5 cm (20¼ inches) for newborns to 61.5 cm (24¼ inches) for 9–12 month-old babies.

Knitting Techniques Used

The Buddy sweater employs several intermediate-level knitting techniques suitable for experienced beginners and developing knitters. The construction begins with a ribbed neckband worked flat on double-pointed needles before transitioning to circular needles for the yoke shaping. The pattern uses top-down seamless construction, which eliminates the need for seaming and allows for easy fit adjustments during the knitting process.

The yoke features progressive increase rounds that shape the garment from the narrow neckline to the wider chest area. Knitters transition from double-pointed needles to a circular needle as stitch counts increase, a standard technique for managing large numbers of stitches in the round. The increase stitches (M1R and M1L) are strategically placed throughout the yoke to create a smooth, fitted shaping. These paired increases are worked at regular intervals across multiple rounds, gradually expanding the yoke from approximately 9.5 cm to 11.5 cm in depth depending on size.

Materials and Gauge

The Buddy sweater is knitted using Baby Cashsoft Merino yarn from Rowan, a soft, luxury blend suitable for delicate baby skin. The pattern requires 2–3 x 50-gram balls depending on the size chosen, with the photographed sample worked in the colorway Piglet.

Needles required include a set of four 3½mm (UK 10/9 / US 4) double-pointed needles for the initial neckband and yoke setup, and a 3½mm (UK 10/9 / US 4) circular needle no longer than 40 cm for working the yoke and body in the round. The specified needle size is essential for achieving the correct tension.

The pattern is worked to a tension of 23 stitches and 30 rounds to 10 cm measured over stockinette stitch using 3½mm needles. Achieving correct tension is critical for proper fit, particularly in baby garments where sizing is precise.
