Rowan Juniper Cardigan: Knitted Striped Design

What is Being Made

The Rowan Juniper is a knitted cardigan designed by Lisa Richardson, available in five sizes to fit bust measurements from 81-86 cm (32-34 in) up to 122-127 cm (48-50 in). This garment features a contemporary striped colorway and is constructed as a classic pullover-style cardigan with functional belt loops for added styling versatility.

Construction Technique

The Juniper cardigan is worked flat on straight needles using a bottom-up construction method, meaning the garment is knitted from the lower edge upward. The finished pieces are then seamed together to create the final garment. This traditional approach allows for precise shaping and straightforward pattern following. The cardigan incorporates horizontal stripes throughout, created by changing between coordinated yarn color combinations at regular intervals as specified in the stripe sequence.

Stitches and Techniques

The pattern employs fundamental knitting stitches suitable for a Skill Level 2 project. The lower edge begins with garter stitch (knit every row) for the first 4 rows, creating a textured, non-curling edge finish. The main body is worked in stockinette stitch throughout, which creates the smooth, classic fabric characteristic of traditional cardigans. The stripe pattern is achieved by changing yarn colors at designated points while maintaining the stockinette stitch structure.

The cardigan features functional belt loops that are created by slipping stitches onto holders during the main body construction, then working these reserved stitches separately on smaller needles (3mm) using a combination of knit and purl stitches to create a structured loop. The belt loop construction uses ribbed detailing (alternating knit and purl stitches: K1, P5, K1) to add elasticity and definition.

Materials: Yarns and Needles

The Rowan Juniper is designed to be worked with Rowan Summerlite 4 ply yarn in four coordinating colors:

  • Yarn A: Rowan 4 ply Pepper Pot (color 431) – 2-4 x 50gm balls depending on size
  • Yarn B: Rowan 4 ply Green Bay (color 445) – 4-6 x 50gm balls depending on size
  • Yarn C: Rowan 4 ply Seashell (color 437) – 2-4 x 50gm balls depending on size
  • Yarn D: Rowan Kidsilk Haze Drab (color 611) – 3-5 x 25gm balls depending on size
  • Yarn E: Rowan Kidsilk Haze Cream (color 634) – 4-6 x 25gm balls depending on size

The pattern specifies that one strand each of yarns A and D are held together for the initial cast-on and garter stitch edge, creating a blended yarn effect. The main body is worked in the specified stripe sequence using these same yarns held together or individually as directed.

The cardigan requires the following needles:

  • 1 pair of 3mm (US 2/3) straight needles
  • 1 pair of 3¼mm (US 3) straight needles
  • 1 circular needle in 3mm (US 2/3), at least 100 cm long
  • Set of 4 double-pointed 3¼mm (US 3) needles

The tension is 23 stitches and 31 rows to 10 cm (4 inches) measured over stockinette stitch, which is essential to achieve the correct finished garment measurements.

Pattern Characteristics

The Juniper demonstrates intermediate knitting skills through its combination of basic stitches with thoughtful design elements. The stripe sequence adds visual interest while remaining accessible for knitters at Skill Level 2. The use of two yarn weights—the standard 4 ply combined with the delicate Kidsilk Haze—creates textural variation within the striped design. The belt loop feature adds a contemporary styling option, allowing the wearer to
