Rowan Lines Cardigan by Georgia Farrell
What is Being Made
The Rowan Lines is an intermediate-level knitted cardigan designed by Georgia Farrell. This garment is available in nine sizes, ranging from 71-76 cm to 152-157 cm bust measurements (28-30 inches to 60-62 inches), with actual finished bust measurements from 110 cm to 192 cm (43¼ inches to 75½ inches). The cardigan features a structured construction with shaped shoulders and a back neck shaping, making it a sophisticated layering piece suitable for various occasions.
Techniques Used
The primary advanced technique employed in this design is intarsia knitting, which allows for the integration of multiple colors and pattern elements throughout the garment. The pattern instructions reference working from a chart using the intarsia technique, enabling knitters to create detailed colorwork designs. The cardigan also incorporates shaping techniques including strategic increases along the body and decreases at the shoulders to create a tailored fit. The construction involves working the back and left front pieces separately from charts, with careful attention to stitch placement and pattern alignment.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
This pattern utilizes stockinette stitch as the foundation fabric, worked at a tension of 20 stitches and 26 rows to 10 centimeters on 4½mm (US 7) needles. The garment incorporates chart-based patterning for both the back and left front sections, allowing for complex colorwork and design elements. Increases are worked at each end of specified rows (beginning at the 25th row depending on size), taken into the pattern as they are created. Shoulder shaping is accomplished through cast-off decreases worked at the beginning of rows in a graduated sequence to create a sloped shoulder line. The pattern also includes back neck shaping with a final cast-off of remaining stitches.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
The Rowan Lines cardigan is constructed using two premium Rowan yarn weights held together in combination. Kidsilk Haze, a luxurious 25-gram ball yarn, is used in four colorways: Peacock (671), Gem (692), Steel (664), and Hurricane (632), with Aura (676) also included. Felted Tweed, a 50-gram ball yarn, appears in five colorways: Bottle Green (207), Vaseline Green (204), Granite (191), Seafarer (170), and Alabaster (197). One strand each of yarns A and B are held together throughout construction, creating a blended yarn with both softness and structure. The pattern is worked on 4½mm (US 7) needles (also referred to as size 7 in UK sizing), with a cable needle required for any cable work elements. Yarn quantities vary by size, with Kidsilk Haze ranging from 4 to 8 balls per color and Felted Tweed ranging from 5 to 10 balls per color depending on the finished garment size.
