Product Description

Rowan Asymmetry from Abstract is a striking women’s vest knit in Felted Tweed and Kidsilk Haze. The pullover has a dazzling slip stitch and intarsia pattern that mixes color and texture. Each of the armholes has a different edging, the right hem has an additional tab, and I-cord trims are used randomly throughout to contrast with a more traditional ribbed edging. Asymmetry is knit flat in pieces from the bottom up and then seamed. Rowan Felted Tweed is a luxurious blend available in a delightful array of heathered shades. The colorwork patterns are in chart form only.

Rowan Asymmetry Knitted Waistcoat by Georgia Farrell

What is Being Made

The Rowan Asymmetry is an advanced-level knitted waistcoat designed by Georgia Farrell. This garment features asymmetrical shaping with differently constructed left and right armholes, creating a contemporary and sophisticated silhouette. The waistcoat is available in nine sizes, ranging from 71-76 cm (28-30 inches) bust to 152-157 cm (60-62 inches) bust, making it suitable for a wide range of body measurements.

Techniques Used

This pattern employs several advanced knitting techniques that contribute to its sophisticated design:

  • Intarsia Technique: The garment uses intarsia colorwork as described in the pattern instructions, allowing for the creation of complex color patterns and designs within the knitted fabric.
  • I-Cord Trim: A three-stitch i-cord trim is knitted throughout the garment using yarn A, creating a refined edge finish. The i-cord is knitted in on one armhole, demonstrating the asymmetrical design element.
  • Asymmetrical Shaping: The left and right armholes are shaped differently, with one armhole featuring a knitted-in i-cord trim, contributing to the garment's distinctive asymmetrical aesthetic.
  • Increases and Decreases: The pattern incorporates techniques such as KFB (knit front and back) for increases and P2tog (purl two together) for decreases to shape the garment.
  • Slip Stitch Details: Slip stitches (sl 1P wyab) are used strategically throughout, pulled tightly across the wrong side for a polished appearance.

Stitches Used

The Rowan Asymmetry utilizes fundamental knitting stitches combined in sophisticated ways:

  • Stockinette Stitch: The primary stitch structure, created through alternating knit and purl rows.
  • Garter Stitch: Likely used in ribbed sections and trims for elasticity and structure.
  • Knit Front and Back (KFB): Used for increasing stitches to shape the garment.
  • Purl Two Together (P2tog): Used for decreasing stitches during shaping.
  • Slip Stitches (sl 1P wyab): Slip one purl-wise with yarn at back, creating a neat edge detail.
  • Chart-Based Patterning: The design incorporates stitch patterns read from charts, requiring the knitter to follow row-by-row instructions for color placement and stitch placement.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The Rowan Asymmetry pattern specifies premium yarns and appropriately sized needles to achieve the intended drape and fit:

Yarns: The pattern uses two distinct yarn types to create texture and visual interest:

  • Rowan Felted Tweed (50gm balls): A wool-rich yarn used in four colorways. Yarn A is Rose Quartz (206), requiring 2-4 balls depending on size. Yarn B is Aluminium (210), requiring 2-5 balls. Yarn E is Bottle Green (207), requiring 1 ball for all sizes. Yarn F is Sulfur (220), requiring 1 ball for all sizes.
  • Rowan Kidsilk Haze (25gm balls): A delicate mohair and silk blend used in two colorways. Yarn C is Eve Green (684), requiring 1-2 balls. Yarn D is Peacock (671), requiring 1 ball for all sizes.

Needles: The pattern requires two needle sizes to create the proper gauge and fabric structure:

  • 1 pair of 3¼mm (US 3) needles, likely used for ribbed edgings and trims.
  • 1 pair of 4mm (US 6) needles, used for the main garment body.

Gauge: The pattern specifies a gauge of 21 stitches and 30 rows to 10 cm (approximately 4 inches) measured over pattern using 4mm (US 6) needles. Achieving this gauge is essential for the garment to fit correctly across
