Rowan Composite Cardigan by Georgia Farrell
What is Being Made
The Rowan Composite is an intermediate-level knitted cardigan designed by Georgia Farrell. This garment is available in nine sizes, ranging from 71–76 cm (28–30 in) bust to 152–157 cm (60–62 in) bust, with finished garment measurements from 91 cm to 173.5 cm across the chest. The cardigan features a structured construction with separate front, back, and sleeve pieces that are worked flat and assembled, making it an ideal project for knitters looking to develop their shaping and finishing skills.
Techniques Used
The Composite cardigan employs several intermediate knitting techniques that build foundational garment construction skills. The pattern uses double cast-on for creating a stable foundation edge, particularly on the front pieces. Decreasing at neck edges is used to shape the neckline, with decreases worked over multiple rows to create a gradual, fitted curve. The pattern incorporates casting off stitches at regular intervals to shape armholes and shoulders, demonstrating how strategic bind-offs create garment structure. The design also features stitch holders for managing stitches that will be worked later, such as the front band stitches and neckline stitches. Additionally, the pattern demonstrates working multiple stitch patterns simultaneously across different sections of the garment—the back, left front, right front, and sleeves each have distinct stitch patterns with different tension requirements, requiring careful attention to pattern placement and consistency.
Stitches Used
While the PDF excerpt does not explicitly name every individual stitch abbreviation, the pattern references patt (pattern) instructions throughout, indicating the use of charted or written stitch patterns specific to each garment section. The pattern employs knit and purl stitches as foundational elements, combined into more complex stitch patterns for visual interest. Decreases are worked at neck and armhole edges using standard decrease methods. The pattern also uses cast-off stitches (bind-off) to shape shoulders and armholes. The front band is created by picking up and working stitches along the front edges, a technique that requires picking up stitches evenly to maintain proper proportions and drape.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
The Composite cardigan is knitted using two premium Rowan yarns held together as a single strand throughout most of the garment. Rowan Felted Tweed (50 gm balls) in shade Granite 191 serves as yarn B, with yardage requirements ranging from 7 balls for the smallest size to 13 balls for the largest size. Rowan Kidsilk Haze (25 gm balls) is used in two colorways: Steel 664 as yarn A (6 to 11 balls depending on size) and Eve Green 684 as yarn C (1 ball for all sizes). The combination of Felted Tweed's structure with the delicate, hairy texture of Kidsilk Haze creates a sophisticated fabric with subtle sheen and drape.
The pattern requires three needle sizes to accommodate the different stitch patterns and their varying tensions. 4 mm (US 6) needles are used for the initial cast-on and certain sections, while 4½ mm (US 7) needles are the primary needles for the main body sections worked in the two-strand yarn combination. A 4 mm (US 6) circular needle at least 120 cm long is required for working the front band. The use of multiple needle sizes reflects the pattern's sophisticated approach to managing different fabric densities across the garment.
Tension and Fabric Characteristics
The Composite cardigan demonstrates advanced tension management, with four distinct tension requirements across different sections of the garment. The back pattern is worked at 18 stitches and 27 rows over 10 cm. The left front pattern requires 20 stitches and 26 rows over 10 cm, while the right front pattern is worked at 19 stitches and 26 rows over 10 cm. The sleeve pattern has the tightest gauge at 17.5 stitches and 31 rows over 10 cm. All sections are worked using 4½ mm (US 7) needles with one strand each of yarns A and B held together. The pattern notes that while row and stitch counts differ between sections due to these varying tensions, the corresponding finished lengths are designed
