Product Description

Rowan Colt from Union is a striking scarf that everyone would want this spring, knit in Softyak DK. This textured accessory will not overheat you as the yarn is a blend of yak, cotton, and nylon. Colt is knit flat from end to end seamlessly. Rowan Softyak DK is a blend of yak, cotton, and nylon with the best of all worlds: the softness of cashmere combined with durability and washability. The darker yak fibers create a beautiful melange with the dyed cotton. The cable patterns are in chart form only.

Rowan Colt Scarf by Martin Storey

What Is Being Made

The Rowan Colt is an intermediate-level knitted scarf measuring 50 cm (19¾ inches) wide and 220 cm (86½ inches) long. This is a substantial, wearable accessory designed to provide both warmth and visual interest through its textured pattern work.

Craft and Techniques

This project uses knitting as the primary craft. The scarf construction employs a combination of foundational and advanced techniques suitable for intermediate knitters:

  • Ribbed edging: The scarf begins and ends with ribbed sections that provide structure and elasticity to the cast-on and cast-off edges
  • Cable work: The main body of the scarf features cable patterns that create dimensional texture and visual depth
  • Gauge management: Achieving the correct tension is emphasized as critical to the success of the finished piece
  • Shaping: Strategic increases and decreases at the center of rows allow the scarf to transition smoothly between the ribbed edges and the patterned main section

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Rowan Colt employs several key stitches and techniques:

  • Knit and purl stitches: Form the foundation of both the ribbed sections and the main pattern
  • Rib pattern: A 2x2 rib (alternating 2 knit stitches and 2 purl stitches) creates the textured borders at both ends of the scarf
  • Cable stitch (C8B): The primary decorative element, created by slipping 4 stitches onto a cable needle, holding them at the back of the work, knitting 4 stitches from the left needle, then knitting the 4 stitches from the cable needle. This technique is repeated throughout a 24-row pattern repeat that forms the main body

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The pattern specifies Rowan Softyak DK yarn, with a total yardage requirement of 14 x 50-gram balls. The yarn shown in the pattern photograph is in the colorway Canopy 254.

Two pairs of needles are required to accommodate the gauge changes throughout the project:

  • 3¼mm (US 3) needles: Used for the ribbed cast-on edge, the transition rows, and the ribbed cast-off edge
  • 4mm (US 6) needles: Used for the main cable pattern section where the majority of the scarf length is worked
  • Cable needle: Essential for executing the C8B cable stitch that forms the pattern repeat

Gauge and Construction Details

The pattern specifies a tension of 26 stitches and 36 rows to 10 centimeters, measured over the cable pattern using 4mm (US 6) needles. This gauge is fundamental to achieving the correct finished dimensions. The scarf begins with a cast-on of 129 stitches, which is increased to 130 stitches before beginning the main pattern work, then decreased back to 129 stitches before the final ribbed section. The main body is worked straight (without shaping) until the scarf reaches approximately 217 centimeters in length, following the 24-row pattern repeat from the provided chart.

Finishing

The pattern includes pressing instructions to be followed according to the information page guidelines, with a recommendation to omit the ribs during pressing to maintain their elasticity and texture. The finished scarf is cast off in rib on the wrong side, creating a neat and professional edge that matches the cast-on edge.
