What Is Being Made

This downloadable knitting pattern from Rowan Yarns features two coordinating accessories designed by Lisa Richardson: a classic beanie hat and a pair of wrist warmers (mitts). The set can be made as individual pieces or together as a complete accessory collection. The beanie is completed to a finished size of 50 cm (19¾ inches) around the head, while each mitt measures 20 cm (7¾ inches) around the hand and 19 cm (7½ inches) in length.

Yarn & Materials

Both pieces are crafted using Rowan Pure Cashmere yarn, a luxurious natural fiber that provides softness and warmth. The beanie requires 2 x 50gm hanks of yarn, while the mitts require 1 x 50gm hank. If making both the beanie and mitts together, you will need a total of 3 hanks. The pattern shown is photographed in Derby Grey 101. Knitting is worked on 3¾mm (US 5) double-pointed needles, a set of 4 needles used for creating seamless, circular garments.

Techniques Used

Both the beanie and mitts are constructed using seamless, worked-in-the-round techniques, which creates garments without visible seams. The pattern employs a bottom-up construction method, meaning pieces are begun at the cast-on edge and worked upward toward the finished edge. The beanie features a classic crown shaping technique where stitches are progressively decreased in a series of strategic rounds to create the fitted crown. The mitts incorporate a thumb opening that is shaped by transitioning from circular knitting to flat knitting worked in rows, allowing for a functional hand opening while maintaining the overall structure.

Stitches & Stitch Patterns

The primary stitch used throughout both pieces is stockinette stitch (st st), a fundamental knit fabric created by alternating knit and purl rows (or knit rounds when working in the round). This stitch produces a smooth, classic appearance ideal for showcasing the luxurious cashmere yarn. The beanie features multiple rounds of knit two together (K2tog) decreases worked at regular intervals to shape the crown. The decrease sequence progresses as follows: Round 7 decreases to 80 stitches, Round 9 to 70 stitches, Round 11 to 60 stitches, Round 13 to 50 stitches, Round 15 to 40 stitches, Round 16 to 30 stitches, Round 17 to 20 stitches, and finally Round 18 to 10 stitches. The remaining stitches are then threaded together and pulled tight to close the crown securely.

Construction Details

The beanie begins with a cast-on of 110 stitches distributed evenly across three of four double-pointed needles. Stitches are worked in the round using the fourth needle, with careful attention paid to avoid twisting the cast-on edge. The fabric is worked in stockinette stitch until the crown shaping begins with the first decrease round.

The mitts begin with a cast-on of 44 stitches, also distributed across three needles and worked in the round. After working in stockinette stitch for 10 cm, the pattern transitions to flat knitting worked in rows to create the thumb opening. This section is worked backwards and forwards with edge stitches (knit stitches at each end) to maintain neat selvage edges. The pattern notes that the cast-on and cast-off edges naturally roll to the right side of the fabric, which is an intentional design feature of the finished piece.

Tension & Sizing

The pattern is designed to be worked at a tension of 22 stitches and 30 rounds to 10 cm (measured over stockinette stitch) using 3¾mm (US 5) needles. Maintaining correct tension is essential for achieving the finished measurements and proper fit of both the hat and mitts.
