Rowan Caine Knitted Sweater by Martin Storey
What is Being Made
The Rowan Caine is a knitted sweater designed by Martin Storey, available in six sizes to fit chest measurements from 81-86 cm (32-34 inches) up to 132-137 cm (52-54 inches). The finished garment features actual chest measurements ranging from 92 cm to 142 cm, providing a comfortable fit across multiple sizing options. This is a classic pullover-style jumper suitable for various occasions and body types.
Construction Technique
This sweater is constructed using the bottom-up knitting method, meaning the garment is worked from the lower edge upward. The pattern includes raglan armhole shaping, which creates diagonal seam lines from the underarm to the neckline. This construction approach allows for straightforward sizing adjustments and provides excellent fit through the shoulders and upper body. The front features neck shaping with a center neckline opening, while the sleeves are set in using the raglan technique for a smooth, comfortable fit.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns Used
The Rowan Caine employs fundamental knitting stitches throughout its construction. The pattern features stockinette stitch (abbreviated as st st) as the primary fabric, creating a smooth, classic appearance. Ribbed knit sections are incorporated at the cuffs and hem, using a K2, P2 rib pattern (knit 2 stitches, purl 2 stitches, repeated across the row). Decreasing techniques include slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over (sl 1, K1, psso) and knit 2 together (K2tog) for shaping the armholes, neckline, and sleeve caps. These classic decreases create neat, professional-looking shaping lines throughout the garment.
Materials and Gauge
The Rowan Caine is designed to be worked in Rowan Felted Tweed yarn, a premium wool blend that provides excellent drape and durability. Depending on the size selected, the pattern requires between 7 and 11 balls of 50-gram yarn (the photographed sample is shown in Stone 190). Two needle sizes are required: 3¼mm (US 3) needles for the ribbed sections and 3¾mm (US 5) needles for the main stockinette stitch fabric. The pattern specifies a tension of 24 stitches and 32 rows to 10 centimeters when measured over stockinette stitch using the 3¾mm needles, ensuring proper fit and garment dimensions.
