Rowan Grasmoor Scarf by Lisa Richardson

What is Being Made

The Rowan Grasmoor Scarf is a knitted accessory measuring 18 cm (7 inches) wide and 180.5 cm (71 inches) long. This is a substantial scarf design suitable for everyday wear, crafted using a traditional knitting approach that creates a finished piece with visual depth and texture.

Craft and Construction Method

This is a knitting project worked flat on straight needles using a bottom-up construction method. The scarf is seamless, meaning it is created as one continuous piece without requiring seaming or joining. The entire design is worked flat in rows rather than in the round, making it accessible for knitters of various experience levels.

Techniques and Stitch Work

The Grasmoor Scarf features prominent cable stitching as its primary decorative element. The pattern incorporates two main cable techniques:

  • C6B (Cable 6 Back): Slip 3 stitches onto a cable needle and leave at the back of work, knit 3, then knit 3 from the cable needle
  • C6F (Cable 6 Front): Slip 3 stitches onto a cable needle and leave at the front of work, knit 3, then knit 3 from the cable needle

The scarf pattern alternates between stockinette sections and ribbed sections. The main body features a 36-row repeating pattern that combines knit and purl stitches with the cable crossings, creating a sophisticated textured design. The cast-on and cast-off edges use a rib stitch (alternating knit and purl stitches) for a neat, elastic finish that frames the cable work.

Materials Required

Yarn: 2 x 100 gm balls of Rowan Moordale (pattern photographed in Gooseberry 004)

Needles: One pair of 3¼mm (US 3) needles and one pair of 4mm (US 6) needles. A cable needle is also required for executing the cable stitches.

Pattern Specifications

The pattern is worked to a tension of 28 stitches and 32 rows over 10 cm measured over the pattern using 4mm (US 6) needles. The scarf begins with a cast-on of 50 stitches using the smaller needles, followed by a 10-row ribbed edge. The main body is then worked on the larger needles in the 36-row cable pattern, repeated 15 times in total, with an additional partial repeat of rows 1 to 18. The scarf concludes with a final 10-row ribbed section worked on the smaller needles before casting off in rib.

Skill Level and Complexity

This pattern is suitable for knitters with intermediate skills who are comfortable working with cables and following multi-row stitch patterns. The cable techniques require the use of a cable needle and careful attention to stitch placement, but the overall structure remains straightforward due to the seamless, flat construction method.
