Product Description

Easy embroidery stitches add an extra special touch to Rowan Jazz from Kids Summer Bright, a cool child’s cardigan knit in Baby Cashsoft Merino. Generous patch pockets are making this sweater super practical too. Jazz is knit flat in pieces from the bottom up and then seamed. The button band stitches are picked up along the fronts edge and worked back and forth. The neckband stitches are picked up along the neck edge and also worked back and forth. Last but not least, use photographs as a guide for color and placement of embroidery stitching. Baby Cashsoft Merino is a wonderfully soft yarn that will create fabrics that are next-to-skin-soft, warm, and snuggly. It’s machine-washable, making it perfect for the entire family.

Rowan Jazz Knitted Sweater and Jumper

Garment Overview

Rowan Jazz is an intermediate-level knitting pattern designed by Brandon Mably, available as a downloadable PDF. This pattern offers versatility with options to create either a fitted sweater or a structured jacket, accommodating a wide range of sizes from 71-76cm to 152-157cm bust measurements. The design combines colorwork techniques with classic knit construction, making it suitable for knitters with some experience.

Construction and Techniques

The garment is constructed using fundamental knitting techniques including cast-on methods, chart-based colorwork, and strategic shaping. The pattern employs garter stitch for the ribbed edging sections, providing a classic finished look. The main body features patterned knitting worked from charts, requiring knitters to follow multi-row instructions for color placement and stitch placement. Neck and shoulder shaping is achieved through strategic decreases and cast-offs, with instructions for working each side of the neck separately to ensure proper fit and symmetry.

The pattern includes detailed instructions for shaping the neckline through successive decreases at the neck edge, combined with shoulder cast-offs. For the jacket variation, the left front section begins with garter stitch edging before transitioning to the main patterned sections. This construction method ensures professional finishing and proper garment drape.

Stitches Used

  • Garter Stitch (g st): Used for the initial ribbed edging sections, providing elasticity and a defined edge
  • Stockinette Stitch: Forms the base for the patterned sections worked from charts
  • Decreases: Single stitch decreases at neck edges for gradual shaping
  • Cast-offs: Used for finishing shoulders and securing edges
  • Chart-based Colorwork: Multi-color patterning worked row by row following provided charts

Materials Required

This pattern uses Softyak DK yarn (50-gram balls), a medium-weight yarn suitable for creating fabric with good drape and stitch definition. The yarn palette includes five coordinated colors:

  • A - Black (249): 4-8 balls depending on size
  • B - Seagrass (249): 4-8 balls depending on size
  • C - Terrain (243): 1 ball for all sizes
  • D - Tuscan Red (253): 1 ball for all sizes
  • E - Prairie (233): 1 ball for all sizes

The pattern requires 3¼mm (US 3) needles and 4mm (US 6) needles for different sections. For the sweater variation, a 3¼mm circular needle no longer than 40-50cm is needed for working the neckline, allowing for seamless finishing of the neck opening.

Size Range and Customization

The pattern accommodates nine different sizes with actual bust measurements ranging from 100cm to 180cm. Each size includes specific stitch counts and row counts for shaping, allowing knitters to customize the fit to their measurements. The detailed sizing information ensures proper proportions across all garment variations.
