Shibui Knits Aalto Poncho

What is Being Made

The Aalto Poncho is a lightweight, easy-to-wear summer cover-up designed by Shellie Anderson. This garment features bold geometric patterning that contrasts beautifully with a graceful bateau neckline. The poncho is available in three sizes to fit bust circumferences of 66, 70, and 76 inches, with finished back lengths ranging from 23.25 to 26.25 inches from the shoulder. The design creates a flattering silhouette suitable for layering over summer dresses or worn as a standalone piece.

Knitting Techniques

Aalto is constructed using a bottom-up, seamless, worked-flat approach. The poncho is knitted in two separate pieces that are later joined together. The construction method involves the following key techniques:

  • German Short Rows (GSR): Used to shape the shoulders with a sloped bind-off throughout. This advanced shaping technique creates smooth, angled decreases without visible holes or gaps.
  • 3-Needle Bind-Off: Joins the two shoulder pieces together with a secure, professional finish.
  • German Twisted Cast-On: Creates the initial stitches with a twisted edge for a polished appearance.
  • Reverse Stockinette Hem and Edging: Provides a refined border detail that frames the garment.
  • Side Tacking: After shoulder seaming, the sides are tacked together to form armhole openings.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch throughout Aalto is Stockinette Stitch (St st), which creates a smooth, classic fabric ideal for showcasing the bold geometric patterning. Reverse Stockinette Stitch is used for the hem and edging details, creating visual contrast and texture. The pattern also incorporates knit and purl stitches worked in specific sequences to build the geometric design elements that define this poncho's striking appearance.

Materials and Tools

Aalto is designed to be worked with Shibui Knits Twig, a luxurious blend yarn composed of 46% linen, 42% recycled silk, and 12% wool. This fiber combination creates a breathable, drape-friendly fabric perfect for a summer cover-up. The yarn is available in 190-yard skeins weighing 50 grams, with yardage requirements of 7, 7, or 8 skeins depending on size.

Knitting is worked on size 6 (4 mm) needles, with a spare needle of the same size required for the 3-Needle Bind-Off. Additional tools include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats, stitch holders for temporarily securing stitches during construction, and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and tacking the side seams.

Gauge and Finished Dimensions

The recommended gauge is 22 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches in Stockinette Stitch after blocking, using one strand of Twig on size 6 needles. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished dimensions. The poncho is offered in three sizes: XS/S (fitting bust 32.5–34.5 inches), M/L (fitting bust 36.5–38.5 inches), and XL (fitting bust 40.5–48.5 inches).

Skill Level

Aalto is rated as an Easy skill level pattern, making it accessible to knitters with basic to intermediate experience. While the pattern incorporates German Short Rows, which is an advanced shaping technique, video tutorials are provided to guide knitters through this method, ensuring successful completion even for those new to this technique.
