Shibui Knits Lucina Tee: Romantic Knit Sweater Pattern
What is Being Made
The Lucina Tee is a romantic short-sleeved knit sweater designed by Tayler Harris. This garment is crafted from luxurious 100% Cashmere yarn and is available in nine sizes ranging from 30–32" bust circumference up to 62–64" bust circumference. The finished bust circumference ranges from 37.5" to 73.75", with the garment intended to be worn with 6–8" of positive ease for a comfortable, relaxed fit. Back length varies from 20.25" to 26" depending on size.
Construction Techniques
Lucina employs a sophisticated combination of knitting techniques to achieve its elegant silhouette. The garment is primarily worked in the round from the bottom up, beginning with a knit hem that establishes a polished foundation. The body is shaped at the sides using invisible increases, which create seamless shaping while maintaining the integrity of the stockinette stitch pattern. The armholes and neckline are shaped using simple decreases and binding off stitches for clean, structured edges.
The shoulders are seamed together using the 3-Needle Bind Off Method, a technique that creates strong, neat shoulder seams while the garment is still on the needles. The sleeves are uniquely worked top-down and shaped using short rows, allowing for precise fit and shaping around the armhole area. Once shaped, the sleeves are joined to work in the round for the remainder of the sleeve length. To complete the neckline, stitches are picked up around the neckline and worked in the round to create a finished neckband. A 1-stitch garter stitch selvedge is maintained at edges of flat pieces throughout the pattern, providing clean, professional finishing details.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch pattern in Lucina is Stockinette Stitch, which creates the smooth, elegant fabric characteristic of this romantic tee. Stockinette stitch is worked in rows on flat pieces and in rounds on circular sections, producing the classic V-pattern texture on the right side of the fabric. Garter stitch is used for the knit hem at the bottom of the garment and for the selvedge edges on flat-worked sections, providing a subtle textured detail and helping edges lay flat. The neckband is also worked in the round, maintaining continuity with the body construction method.
Materials and Tools
Lucina is knit with Shibui Knits Pure Cashmere, a luxurious 100% cashmere yarn. The yardage is 220 yards per 25-gram skein, and the pattern requires 5 to 13 skeins depending on the size selected, with the sample shown in Ivory colorway.
Two needle size options are provided to accommodate different yarn preferences or desired fabric characteristics. For a denser fabric, US 2 (3 mm) needles are used, achieving a gauge of 27 stitches and 40 rounds over 4 inches in stockinette stitch after blocking. For a more open fabric, US 3 (3.25 mm) needles are used, achieving a gauge of 26 stitches and 38 rounds over 4 inches in stockinette stitch after blocking.
The complete tool kit includes:
- Circular needles: Size 2 or 3 (3 mm or 3.25 mm) in both 32" or 40" length and 16" length
- Double-pointed needles (DPNs): Size 2 or 3 (3 mm or 3.25 mm) for working small circumferences
- Stitch markers: For tracking pattern repeats and construction sections
- Tapestry needle: For seaming shoulders and weaving in yarn ends
- Blocking wires and T-pins (optional): For shaping and finishing the garment after washing
- Scissors: For cutting yarn
