Shibui Knits North Cable Pullover

What is Being Made

North is a sophisticated cable pullover sweater designed by Shellie Anderson, featuring a distinctive asymmetric construction with an offset square cable pattern and open vent detail. This pullover is crafted as a relaxed, wearable piece suitable for intermediate knitters seeking a modern design with visual interest and refined construction techniques.

Construction and Techniques

The North pullover employs a bottom-up construction method, where the body is worked from the lower edge upward. The garment features a unique asymmetric design: the left and right sides are worked separately and then seamed together in the round, creating an intentional open vent where the two sides meet. This construction approach allows for the distinctive cable placement and asymmetric hem.

The lower edges and sides of the vent opening are finished with I-cord edging, a decorative and functional technique that provides a polished, defined border. At the armholes, the work is divided for front and back sections and worked flat to the shoulders, transitioning from circular to flat construction. Sleeves are worked flat from the cuff up and then set into the armholes using seaming techniques. The collar is picked up from the neckline and worked in the round to complete the garment.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The primary stitch used throughout North is stockinette stitch, which provides a smooth, classic fabric base that allows the cable pattern to stand out with vivid definition. The signature design element is a cable pattern worked on the front left side of the pullover, following a Cable Chart that is repeated during construction. The cable motif creates dimensional texture and visual movement across the front of the garment. German Short Rows are employed in the construction process to shape the garment and create the asymmetric hem detail.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

North is designed to be worked with Shibui Knits Drift, a luxurious yarn blend consisting of 85% Extra Fine Merino and 15% Cashmere. This fiber combination provides both softness and stitch definition, allowing the cable pattern and construction details to be clearly visible. The yarn is worked with a single strand throughout the project.

Yardage requirements vary by size: 11 (11, 12, 13, 13, 15, 16) skeins are needed, with each skein containing 110 yards. The pattern shown features the colorway Suit.
