cotton and acrylic, this lightweight yarn was designed to be soft and strong
enough to stand up to active kids. With contrasting color sleeves and striped trims,

Sirdar Varsity Jacket
What is Being Made
The Sirdar Varsity Jacket (Design No. 2541) is a striped cardigan jacket designed for children aged 3 to 7 years. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a classic varsity-style jacket featuring contrasting color stripes, perfect for everyday wear. The jacket is available in five size options ranging from 59 cm to 69 cm chest width, with corresponding adjustments in length and sleeve measurements to accommodate growing children.
Techniques Used
This jacket is constructed using several key knitting techniques that create both structure and visual interest:
- Bottom-up construction: The jacket is knitted starting from the lower edge and working upward, allowing for easy length adjustments and a natural fit
- Worked flat: Pieces are knitted on flat needles rather than in the round, making this an accessible project for knitters comfortable with two-needle techniques
- Seamed assembly: Individual pieces are sewn together after knitting, creating clean, professional seams throughout the garment
- Striped colorwork: The design incorporates horizontal stripes using two contrasting yarn shades (Daredevil Denim and Time-out Teal, or other color combinations from the Snuggly Replay range), adding visual depth and a vintage varsity aesthetic
Stitches Used
The primary stitch throughout this design is stocking stitch (also called stockinette stitch), which creates the smooth, classic fabric base. The gauge for this pattern is 22 stitches and 28 rows over 10 cm (4 inches) in stocking stitch using double knitting weight yarn. This consistent stitch structure provides a comfortable, flexible fabric ideal for children's clothing that needs to move with active wear.
Materials
The Sirdar Varsity Jacket is designed to be knitted using Sirdar Snuggly Replay, a double knitting (DK) weight yarn in 50g balls. This yarn is a cotton blend available in soft, marled shades including Daredevil Denim (shade 107) and Time-out Teal (shade 113), among other colorway options. The pattern requires 3 balls of Yarn A and 2 balls of Yarn B for all sizes, making it an economical project. Five or six buttons (depending on size) are needed to complete the jacket closure. Standard knitting needles appropriate for double knitting weight yarn are required, along with basic seaming tools. The Snuggly Replay yarn is specifically formulated to be lightweight, washable, and gentle on children's skin, making it ideal for everyday garments that require frequent laundering.
