String Juliette Cardigan

What is Being Made

The String Juliette Cardigan is a sophisticated, color-blocked cardigan designed by Lidia Karabinech. This garment features a luxurious blend of natural and synthetic fibers, combining cashmere, lambswool, silk, viscose, polyester, and cotton for a refined drape and comfortable wear. The cardigan is offered in four sizes ranging from Small to Extra Large, with finished bust measurements from 36 inches to 49 inches and a consistent length to shoulder of 24 inches.

Techniques Used

The Juliette Cardigan is constructed using bottom-up seamed construction, meaning individual pieces are knitted separately from the bottom edge upward and then sewn together. The garment is worked flat on circular needles, which provides stability and ease of handling despite the flat construction method. This approach allows for precise shaping and the integration of multiple stitch patterns and color changes throughout the design.

Stitches Used

  • 1x1 Ribbing: Used as the foundation ribbing at the lower edge, worked over 13 rows to create elasticity and structure at the hem
  • Stockinette Stitch (St st): The primary stitch used throughout much of the garment, created by knitting on right-side rows and purling on wrong-side rows, producing the classic smooth, V-textured fabric
  • Reverse Stockinette Stitch (Rev St st): Used strategically in the design to create visual contrast and texture variation, worked by purling on right-side rows and knitting on wrong-side rows

Pattern Details and Stripe Sequence

The cardigan incorporates a sophisticated multi-color stripe sequence that creates visual interest and depth. The pattern alternates between different yarns and stitch patterns in a specific sequence: Rows 1–2 feature Yarn C and D held together in Reverse Stockinette Stitch, Rows 3–12 continue with Yarn C in Reverse Stockinette Stitch, Rows 13–18 shift to Yarn A in Stockinette Stitch, and Rows 19–22 return to Yarn C in Reverse Stockinette Stitch. This repeating sequence creates a balanced, rhythmic color pattern throughout the garment.

Shaping and Construction

The Juliette Cardigan features strategic shaping for a tailored fit. The left front begins with a cast-on of 43 to 58 stitches depending on size, and includes both sleeve and V-neck shaping. Stitches are increased at regular intervals using the Knitted Cast-On method to form the sleeve cap, while simultaneous decreases shape the V-neckline. The back neck accommodates 32 to 38 stitches, and sleeves are shaped to hold 103 to 115 stitches at their widest point. All pieces are placed on stitch holders during construction and later seamed together to complete the garment.

Materials and Tools

The Juliette Cardigan requires String AMALFI yarn, a premium blend of 14% cashmere, 25% lambswool, 22% silk, and 39% viscose (50g balls; 180 yards per ball). Three complementary colors are used: Sand Dollar (A), Bark (B), and Starry Night (C). Additionally, Stacy Charles Fine Yarns CRYSTAL, a blend of 85% polyester and 15% cotton (25g balls; 144 yards per ball), is used in Starry Night (D) as an accent yarn held together with Yarn C. Construction requires US 6 (4.0mm) circular needles in either 32-inch or 40-inch lengths, along with stitch holders, stitch markers, and a yarn needle for seaming. The recommended gauge is 19 stitches and 28 rows per 4 inches in Stockinette Stitch.
