String Park City Cabled Headband & Cowl

What Is Being Made

The String Park City Cabled Headband & Cowl is a two-piece accessory set designed by Annabelle Speer. This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for creating both a fitted headband and a matching cowl using the same yarn and coordinating cable stitch patterns. The headband measures 4 inches at its widest point with an 18½-inch circumference, while the cowl is slightly larger at 6¼ inches tall with a 22-inch circumference. Knitters can choose to make both pieces from a single yarn purchase or focus on one project alone.

Techniques Used

This pattern employs multiple knitting construction methods to create interesting texture and fit. The headband is worked flat on straight needles, requiring seaming to join the finished edges together. In contrast, the cowl is worked in the round using a circular needle, creating a seamless tubular construction that eliminates the need for finishing seams. Both pieces feature prominent cable work as the primary design element, with cables crossed at regular intervals to create dimensional, braided textures.

Stitches Used

The pattern incorporates several key stitch techniques:

  • Little Plait Cable – A 10-stitch panel that forms the focal point of both the headband and cowl. This cable is worked over 4 rows (in flat knitting) or 4 rounds (in the round), alternating between knit stitches crossed to the back (C4B) and to the front (C4F) to create a braided appearance.
  • Raveled Braid – An additional cable pattern used in the cowl, worked over 24 rounds and featuring 3-stitch crosses (C3B and C3F) combined with knit and purl stitches to create a more intricate textured repeat.
  • Reverse Stockinette Stitch – Purled on the right side and knitted on the wrong side, providing a subtle textured background that contrasts with the raised cables.
  • P2, K2 Rib – A 2-purl, 2-knit ribbed pattern used as edging, providing stretch and structure to the finished pieces.
  • Increases and Decreases – M1P (make 1 purlwise) for increases and P2tog (purl 2 together) for decreases, allowing for shaping within the pattern.

Materials

The pattern calls for String Yarns DOLCETTO, a luxury blend composed of 70% extrafine merino wool and 30% cashmere. This yarn comes in 50-gram balls with 136 yards per ball. Two balls of DOLCETTO are required to complete both the headband and cowl together; however, if making the cowl only, two balls are still needed. The recommended color is #200073.

Needles and notions include one pair of size 10½ (6.5mm) straight needles for the headband, one size 10½ (6.5mm) circular needle measuring 20 inches long for the cowl, a cable needle for manipulating stitches during cable crossings, a stitch marker for tracking rounds in the cowl, and a yarn needle for weaving in ends and seaming the headband.

Gauge and Sizing

Proper gauge is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements. For the headband, knitters should achieve 20 stitches and 24 rows over 4 inches in the Raveled Braid pattern. For the cowl, the gauge is 18 stitches and 22½ rounds over 3¾ inches in the Raveled Braid pattern. The pattern is offered in one size only.
