What is Being Made

The Erin Hat is a seamless, intermediate-level knitted hat designed by Michele Rose Orne. This charming design features a distinctive spiral construction that creates a visual effect reminiscent of a periwinkle shell or Turkish minaret. The hat is worked in the round from the bottom up, beginning with a clean rolled edge that spirals to its peak. The design is completed with a small i-cord knot at the top. Available in four sizes ranging from extra small to large, with finished circumferences from 18¾ inches to 22¾ inches and heights from 8½ inches to 10¼ inches.

Techniques Used

This hat is constructed using seamless, in-the-round knitting techniques. The pattern employs a spiral ridge construction method that combines fundamental knitting techniques to create visual interest without complex stitch patterns. The rolled edge is created by knitting with smaller needles before transitioning to larger needles for the main body. The spiral effect is achieved through strategic placement of increases and decreases worked in a repeating pattern around each round. Stitches Used

Materials

The Erin Hat is knitted with Swans Island Natural Colors 100% Organic Merino Wool yarn in worsted weight. One skein is required, with each skein containing 100 grams and 250 yards of yarn. The pattern photo shows the hat knitted in the Garnet colorway (YW201). Knitting needles required include US Size 7 (4.5 mm) 16-inch circular needles and a set of five double-pointed needles in the same size for working the crown decreases. US Size 5 (3.75 mm) double-pointed needles (set of three) are used for the initial rolled edge. Additional materials include a yarn needle for weaving in ends and closing the crown, and five stitch markers of one color plus one stitch marker of a different color to mark the beginning of rounds.

Gauge

The pattern is worked at a gauge of 4½ stitches by 6¾ rounds per inch over the spiral pattern using the larger needles. Checking gauge before beginning is essential to ensure proper fit across all four sizes.
