Tahki Yarns Bar Harbor Tank

What Is Being Made

The Bar Harbor Tank is a sleeveless pullover top designed by Therese Chenowyth. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a fitted tank with a decorative center panel, available in five sizes ranging from Small to 2XL. The finished garment offers bust measurements from 36 inches (Small) to 51½ inches (2XL), with lengths varying from 21½ inches to 25 inches depending on size. The tank is designed to be worn with 2–4 inches of positive ease for comfortable fit.

Techniques Used

The Bar Harbor Tank employs seamed construction and is worked flat on circular needles, meaning pieces are knitted in flat rows rather than in the round. This approach allows for precise shaping and the incorporation of stitch pattern details. The pattern features increases and decreases to create shaping at the bust and waist, with techniques including yarn overs for decorative elements and various decrease methods to achieve the fitted silhouette.

Stitches Used

This pattern incorporates several key stitch techniques:

  • K1, P1 Rib – A classic alternating knit and purl rib used for edges and ribbed sections, providing elasticity and structure
  • Half Fisherman's Rib – A textured rib stitch featured in the center panel, created by knitting into the row below and combining knit and purl stitches for dimensional texture
  • Knit 1 Below (K1-b) – Inserting the needle into the stitch in the row below for texture and pattern definition
  • Yarn Overs (yo) – Creating decorative openings and lace-like details in the center panel
  • Decreases – Including K2tog (knit 2 together) and ssk/ssp (slip, slip, knit/purl) for shaping
  • Increases – Using K1 front and back (K1-f/b) to add stitches where needed for fit

Materials and Tools

The Bar Harbor Tank is crafted using Tahki Yarns COTTON CLASSIC TWIST, a 100% mercerized cotton yarn. Yardage requirements range from 7 skeins (Small) to 12 skeins (2XL), with each skein containing 1.75 ounces and 108 yards. The recommended color is #5737 sherbet. The pattern calls for US size 6 (4mm) circular needles in both 16-inch and 24-inch lengths, allowing flexibility for different construction stages. Additional supplies include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and a yarn needle for seaming and finishing.

Gauge and Construction Details

Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper fit. The pattern specifies 18½ stitches and 34 rows over 4 inches in Half Fisherman's Rib. The center panel features a 20-row repeat pattern that creates visual interest and texture throughout the garment. The tank's construction involves working multiple pieces flat and seaming them together, with careful attention to shaping increases and decreases to create a flattering silhouette.
