Tahki Yarns Greenleaf Pullover
What Is Being Made
The Greenleaf Pullover is an intermediate-level knitted sweater designed by Rosemary Drysdale. This pullover is available in six sizes ranging from extra-small to 2XL, with finished bust measurements from 35 inches (89 cm) to 54 inches (137 cm). The sweater is designed to fit with 5 to 7 inches (12.5 to 18 cm) of positive ease, making it a comfortable, relaxed-fitting garment. The length varies slightly by size, ranging from 23½ inches (59.5 cm) to 26 inches (66 cm), providing options for different proportions and preferences.
Techniques Used
The Greenleaf Pullover is constructed using seamed construction and is worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round. This traditional approach allows knitters to work the back, front, and sleeves as separate pieces before assembling them together with seams. Working flat provides excellent stitch definition and makes it easier to maintain consistent gauge throughout the project. The sweater features a neckband that is picked up and worked on a circular needle after the body is complete, creating a finished edge at the neck opening.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The primary stitch pattern featured in the Greenleaf Pullover is Eyelet Lace Rib, which is worked over a multiple of 12 stitches plus 1. This sophisticated stitch pattern combines elements of both ribbing and lace work, creating visual interest and texture throughout the garment.
The Eyelet Lace Rib pattern is worked as follows:
- Row 1 (Right Side): K2, *p2, k2tog, yo, k1, yo, ssk, p2, k3; repeat from * to last 11 stitches, p2, k2tog, yo, k1, yo, ssk, p2, k2
- Row 2 (Wrong Side): P2, *k2, p5, k2, p3; repeat from * to last 11 stitches, k2, p5, k2, p2
- Row 3: K2, *p2, k5, p2, k3; repeat from * to last 11 stitches, p2, k5, p2, k2
- Row 4: Repeat Row 2
These four rows form the complete pattern repeat for Eyelet Lace Rib. The pattern incorporates yarn overs (yo) and decreases such as k2tog (knit 2 together) and ssk (slip, slip, knit) to create the characteristic eyelets and openwork details. The pattern also includes knit and purl stitches to establish the ribbed structure that frames the lace elements.
The sweater begins with a K1, P1 Rib cuff worked for 10 rows, providing an elastic edge that helps the garment maintain its shape. Setup rows transition the stitches from the ribbed cuff into the main Eyelet Lace Rib pattern.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Greenleaf Pullover is designed to be knitted with Tahki Yarns Donegal Tweed Fine, a blend of 70% wool and 30% mohair. This fiber composition creates a yarn with excellent warmth, elasticity, and a subtle texture. The yarn is available in color #2723 teal, a sophisticated blue-green shade. Each ball contains 1.75 ounces (50 grams) and provides 218 yards (200 meters) of yardage. The pattern requires 6 to 9 balls depending on the finished size, with smaller sizes (XS and Small) requiring 6 balls, medium sizes (Medium and Large) requiring 7 balls, and larger sizes (XL, 2XL) requiring 8 to 9 balls respectively.
Needles and Gauge
The Greenleaf Pullover is worked on size 4 (3.5mm) needles in both straight and circular formats. Straight needles are used for the flat construction of the body pieces, while a 24-inch (60 cm) circular needle in the same size is used for the neckband. The recommended gauge for this pattern is 25 stitches and
