Product Description
Tahki Yarns Valier is a classic women’s sweater with an unusual construction. The cabled bands that make up the front and back yoke are knit first, and stitches are picked up along the edges for the lower front and back and knit down to the hem. Stitches for the sleeves are picked up around the armholes and worked flat to the cuffs. Donegal Tweed Fine is a beautiful tweed blend of wool and mohair that works up into lightweight but warm fabrics, and with so many colors to choose from, you’ll want to knit Valier more than once! Note: Cable pattern is both written and charted.

Tahki Yarns Valier Knit Sweater Pattern
What Is Being Made
The Valier pattern is a knitted pullover sweater designed by Rosemary Drysdale. This garment is available in six sizes ranging from Small through 3X, with finished bust measurements from 36 inches (91.5 cm) to 56 inches (142 cm) and lengths from 22½ inches (57 cm) to 25 inches (63.5 cm). The sweater features a classic construction with a cable-detailed yoke, ribbed cuffs, and a crew neckline.
Construction Techniques
The Valier sweater uses a top-down construction method, meaning the garment is knitted beginning at the neckline and working downward. The pieces are worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, requiring seaming to join sections together. This approach allows knitters to try on the garment as it progresses and adjust length easily before binding off.
The sweater is constructed in distinct sections: the Back and Front yokes feature cable patterning, with shoulder seams sewn together after the yoke sections are complete. Sleeves are picked up from armhole markers and worked downward, with decreases worked to shape the sleeve cap. The pattern includes blocking to finished measurements to ensure proper fit and drape.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The Valier pattern employs several fundamental knitting stitches:
- Stockinette Stitch (St st) – knit on right-side rows and purl on wrong-side rows – forms the primary fabric of the body and sleeves
- Reverse Stockinette Stitch (rev St st) – purl on right-side rows and knit on wrong-side rows – used for textural contrast
- K2, P2 Rib – an alternating knit and purl pattern that appears at the cuffs and neckline, providing elasticity and a finished edge
- Cable stitches – specifically C8F (cable 8 front) and C8B (cable 8 back), which are worked by slipping stitches to a cable needle and crossing them over active stitches to create twisted rope-like textures. These cables are featured in an 8-row repeat pattern on the yoke sections
The cable chart provided in the pattern guides the placement and timing of cable crosses on the front and back yokes, creating visual interest in the upper portion of the sweater.
Materials and Gauge
The Valier pattern calls for Tahki Yarns Donegal Tweed Fine, a blend of 70% wool and 30% mohair. The yarn is supplied in skeins of 1.75 ounces (50 grams) with 218 yards (200 meters) per skein. Yardage requirements range from 6 skeins for the smallest size to 9 skeins for the largest size. The pattern shown is worked in color #2704 light grey.
Knitting is worked on size 4 (3.5mm) needles, or the size required to obtain the specified gauge. A cable needle is essential for manipulating stitches during cable work. Additional supplies include stitch markers for tracking pattern sections and armhole placement, and a yarn needle for weaving in ends and seaming pieces together.
The pattern specifies a gauge of 23 stitches and 32 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in Stockinette Stitch. Achieving correct gauge is critical for proper fit, and knitters are advised to knit a gauge swatch and block it before beginning the project.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as beginner-friendly, making it suitable for knitters new to garment construction. While the pattern includes cable work, the cables are straightforward and worked on a limited basis within the yoke sections. The top-down construction method simplifies fitting adjustments, and the overall structure uses basic stitches that beginning knitters can master with practice.
