Tahki Yarns Winnett Pullover
What is Being Made
The Winnett Pullover is an intermediate-level knitted sweater designed by Joan Beebe. This pullover is available in seven sizes ranging from extra small to 3X, with finished bust measurements from 35¾ inches (91 cm) to 65¼ inches (165.5 cm) and lengths from 22 inches (56 cm) to 26½ inches (67.5 cm). The garment features a classic pullover construction with set-in sleeves and a crew neckline.
Construction Techniques
The Winnett Pullover employs a distinctive construction method that combines multiple working techniques. The sleeves are worked in the round on the wrong side to the yoke, then placed on holders or scrap yarn. The body is worked in the round to the yoke, where it is then joined with the sleeves to complete the yoke in the round. This approach continues to the neck shaping, which is finished by working back and forth in rows. When changing colors for the stripes, the unused color is left attached and loosely carried along the edge.
Stitch Techniques
This pattern incorporates several specialized stitches and techniques:
- Stockinette Stitch: The primary stitch used throughout the garment, worked flat for gauge purposes
- Stripe Pattern: A four-row repeating pattern alternating between the contrast color and main color, worked in stockinette stitch
- M1p (Make 1 Purlwise): An increase technique where the left-hand needle is inserted under a loop two rows below the last stitch worked, then the right-hand needle inserts purlwise in the loop and purls
- RC3 (Right Cable 3): Slip 2 stitches to cable needle and hold in back, knit 1, then knit 2 from cable needle
- RC3p (Right Cable 3 Purl): Slip 1 stitch to cable needle and hold in front, purl 2, then purl 1 from cable needle
- K2tog (Knit 2 Together): A decrease technique where 2 stitches are knitted together through the front loops
- P2tog (Purl 2 Together): A decrease technique where 2 stitches are purled together through the front loops
Materials and Gauge
The Winnett Pullover is knitted using Tahki Yarns Donegal Tweed Fine, a yarn composition of 70% wool and 30% mohair. Each hank weighs 1.75 ounces (50 grams) and yields 218 yards (200 meters). The pattern requires two colors: color #2707 chestnut (main color) and color #2730 faded denim (contrast color). Yardage requirements vary by size, ranging from 4 hanks of the main color and 4 hanks of the contrast color for the smallest size (XS) to 6 hanks of each color for the largest size (3X).
The pattern is worked on size 5 (3.75 mm) needles for the main fabric and size 4 (3.5 mm) needles for ribbed sections. Needle requirements include one 32-inch (80 cm) circular needle in size 5, one set of 4 or 5 size 5 double-pointed needles, one 16-inch (40 cm) and one 32-inch (80 cm) circular needle in size 4, and one set of 4 or 5 size 4 double-pointed needles. Additional supplies include a cable needle, stitch markers (with one unique color for marking the beginning of rounds on the body), stitch holders or waste yarn, and a yarn needle for finishing.
The gauge is 26 stitches and 40 rounds equal 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch using the stripe pattern on larger needles. Checking gauge before beginning is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements.
