This cotton yarn is available in a number of colorways, and works up into varying width stripes as you work. This sweater is worked flat in pieces beginning with a provisional cast on at the center back and working each side down to the cuff. The fronts are also worked flat sideways and seamed to the back during finishing. With narrow garter stitch borders and buttonband, the chevron lace is beautifully framed and has a polished finish. Trendsetter Yarns D Celebrate Side to Side Chevron Cardigan
What Is Being Made
The D Celebrate Side to Side Chevron Cardigan is a knitted cardigan designed by Jan Runkel of Just Jan Designs. This garment features a distinctive side-to-side construction method, meaning the cardigan is worked horizontally from the center outward toward the cuffs, rather than in the traditional top-down or bottom-up approach. The finished cardigan offers a standard length boxy silhouette and is available in six sizes ranging from Small to 2X, fitting bust measurements from 36 inches to 56 inches.
Construction and Techniques
This cardigan employs several advanced knitting techniques to create visual interest and texture:
- Side-to-Side Construction: All pieces are worked from the center toward the cuffs, allowing for unique shaping and a distinctive chevron pattern that runs horizontally across the garment.
- Lace Work: The primary stitch pattern is an Eyelet Chevron Stitch, which incorporates yarn overs and decreases to create an openwork lace effect with a chevron or zigzag visual motif.
- Striping: The pattern instructions note that yarn colors and stripes are worked at random, allowing crafters to work directly from the skein (either from inside or outside of the ball) for organic, unpredictable color placement.
- Seamed Construction: The cardigan is worked flat in separate pieces and then seamed together, providing structure and clean finishing.
- Border Details: A five-stitch Garter Stitch border is incorporated along the bottom edge for a finished, stable edge treatment.
Stitches Used
The cardigan utilizes three primary stitch patterns:
- Garter Stitch: Created by knitting every row, this stitch provides a textured, reversible fabric and is used for the bottom border edge to frame the lace pattern.
- Stockinette Stitch: The fundamental knit fabric created by alternating knit rows (right side) and purl rows (wrong side), providing a smooth base for contrast.
- Eyelet Chevron Stitch: A complex lace stitch pattern that combines yarn overs (Yo), knit two together decreases (K2-tog), and slip-slip-knit decreases (SSK) to form a repeating chevron or diamond-shaped openwork pattern. This stitch creates the signature visual design of the cardigan and requires careful attention to the detailed row-by-row instructions provided in the pattern.
Materials and Gauge
The cardigan is worked using Trendsetter Celebrate yarn in color #4167. The yardage requirements vary by size, ranging from 400 grams for the smallest sizes (Small, Medium, and Large) to 700 grams for the largest size (2X). Knitting needles in size #4 (US) are used throughout the project. The gauge is measured as 22 stitches over 4 inches when working the Eyelet Chevron Stitch with the specified yarn and needle size, making this an important measurement to verify before beginning the project to ensure proper finished dimensions.
Design Features
The D Celebrate Side to Side Chevron Cardigan combines lace and texture in a wearable, contemporary design. The random striping created by working directly from the yarn skein adds visual complexity and movement to the garment, while the chevron lace pattern provides an elegant, feminine touch. The boxy silhouette and side-to-side construction create a modern fit suitable for layering, and the lace openwork makes this an ideal transitional piece for spring and fall wear.
