What is Being Made

Byway is a top-down seamless knit sweater designed by Olya Bagi and published by Twist Collective. This pullover sweater is available in six sizes, ranging from 34" to 52 ½" bust measurement, with finished lengths between 24 ¾" and 28 ½". The sweater is intended to be worn with 2–4" of ease for a comfortable, relaxed fit.

Construction Techniques

Byway employs a sophisticated top-down, seamless construction method that minimizes finishing work and creates a garment with excellent fit potential. The sweater begins with a provisional cast-on, allowing for later grafting or joining. The front and back panels are worked separately from the provisional cast-on to the armhole, using an advanced shaping technique throughout this section.

Short rows are strategically employed to shape the shoulders during the initial flat construction phase. This technique creates a custom shoulder slope that accommodates different body proportions. After the front and back sections reach the armhole, they are joined and worked in the round to the hem, eliminating side seams and creating a seamless garment body. Sleeve stitches are picked up from the armhole opening and worked in the round from the shoulder down, following the same seamless philosophy. Pockets are worked separately and sewn in place, providing functional design details.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The primary stitch pattern throughout Byway is the 1x1 Twisted Rib, which appears in two variations depending on construction phase:

• 1x1 Twisted Rib in rows: Worked flat during the initial front and back shaping, this pattern alternates knit through the back loop with purl stitches, creating a refined vertical texture. The twisted rib variations create a subtle texture with excellent recovery and drape, ideal for a fitted sweater that maintains its shape through wear and washing.

Cable Details

Byway incorporates cables as a design element, though the specific cable patterns and placement are detailed within the full pattern instructions. Cables add visual interest and textural depth to the sweater design, complementing the twisted rib foundation.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

Suggested Yarn: The pattern recommends Valley Yarns Amherst, a 100% Merino Wool yarn with yardage of 109 yards per 1 ¾ oz (50 g) hank. The sample shown in size 38 ¼" requires approximately 11 to 13 skeins (depending on final size), providing sufficient yardage for the complete sweater. Valley Yarns Amherst in the colorway Ash was used for the photographed sample.

Needles Required: Byway calls for needles in two sizes to accommodate different stitch densities:

• Size 8 US (5 mm) circular needles: Available in 24–48" lengths depending on bust size, used for the main body and sleeve construction where the twisted rib pattern is worked.
• Size 6 US (4 mm) circular needles: A 24–48" length for the hem (depending on bust size) and a 16" length for small circumference knitting in the round, used for the standard 1x1 rib edgings that provide elastic finishing.
• Additional needles in preferred style for small circumference knitting in the round are recommended for both sizes, allowing knitters to choose their preferred method (DPNs, small circular needles, or magic loop technique) for sleeve and neckline work.
