What is Being Made

Caeles is a tunic-length summer top designed by Hilary Smith Callis with a retro modern aesthetic. The garment is fitted through the bust and waist, then flares out to fall loosely around the hips, creating a flattering silhouette. Available in nine sizes ranging from 29 ¾ inches to 57 ¾ inches bust measurement, this piece is intended to be worn with 0–2 inches of negative ease for a refined fit. The finished length ranges from 26 to 28 ¼ inches depending on size.

Construction Techniques

Caeles employs a sophisticated top-down seamless construction method that combines both flat and in-the-round knitting techniques. The garment begins at the back neck and shoulders, where short rows are used to shape the back neck opening. The back is then worked flat down to the armhole shaping. Stitches for the right and left fronts are picked up from the top of the back and worked down separately until they are joined at the bottom of the front neck. Once armhole shaping is complete, the front and back pieces are joined together and the remainder of the body is worked in the round for seamless construction.

Body shaping is accomplished using princess lines on both the front and back, creating elegant vertical shaping that enhances the fitted waist and hip flare. The collar and sleeves are worked from stitches picked up after the body is complete, with short rows creating their final shape.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques

The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches including knit and purl stitches as the foundation. Short rows are a key shaping technique employed throughout the garment—used to shape the back neck, and later to create the collar and sleeve shaping. Increases are worked using M1P-L (make one purl left) and M1P-R (make one purl right) techniques for seamless shaping along the princess lines. The pattern includes wrap and turn (w&t) techniques for executing short rows, with wraps hidden by knitting them together with the wrapped stitch on subsequent rows.

Materials

Caeles is designed to be knit with Valley Yarns Goshen, a luxurious blend yarn containing 48% cotton, 46% rayon, and 6% silk. This fiber composition makes the yarn ideal for a summer garment, providing breathability and drape. The yardage per skein is 92 yards (84 meters) per 1 ¾ ounce (50 gram) skein. Depending on size, the project requires between 7 and 12 skeins of yarn.

Needles required include a size 7 US (4.5 mm) circular needle measuring 24–40 inches (60–100 cm) in length, with the specific length depending on your size. Additionally, size 7 US (4.5 mm) needles in your preferred style for small circumference knitting in the round are needed for working the sleeves and collar sections.
