What is Being Made

Passerine is a seamless circular cowl designed by Fiona Munro for Twist Collective. This innovative project creates an infinity scarf loop through a unique construction method that produces a half twist in the finished fabric. The cowl measures 35 inches in circumference and 9¾ inches in width, making it a substantial neckwear piece suitable for layering and styling versatility.

Construction and Techniques

This cowl is worked entirely in the round using seamless knitting techniques, eliminating the need for seaming. The design begins with a provisional cast-on edge and is constructed continuously in the round until the final rows are reached. The most distinctive technique employed is the creation of a half twist through strategic grafting: the first stitch of the final round is grafted to the middle stitch of the provisional cast-on (specifically stitch 58 of the 116 cast-on stitches) rather than to the corresponding first stitch. This offset grafting creates the signature half-twist characteristic of the design.

The cowl features stranded colorwork, with a charted pattern that is repeated twice per round. The colorwork section spans 67 rows and is presented in chart form for easy reference during knitting. After completing the colorwork pattern, the knitter continues working in stockinette stitch with the main color only until the piece reaches its full 35-inch circumference.

Stitches Used

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The pattern calls for Rowan Felted Tweed DK yarn, a DK-weight blend consisting of 50% Merino Wool, 25% Alpaca, and 25% Viscose. Each skein contains 191 yards (175 meters) per 1¾ ounces (50 grams). The project requires 3 skeins in colorway #170 Seafarer for the main color (MC) and 1 skein in colorway #197 Alabaster for the contrast color (CC).

Knitting needles required include a Size 6 US (4 mm) circular needle suited for small circumference knitting in the round. Additional notions include a stitch marker for marking the beginning of each round, a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, waste yarn for the provisional cast-on, and a spare needle for holding stitches during the grafting process.

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern specifies a gauge of 24 stitches and 32 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in stockinette stitch. Checking gauge before beginning is recommended to ensure accurate finished measurements. Finishing

After completing all 67 rows of the charted colorwork pattern and continuing with stockinette stitch to the full circumference measurement, the provisional cast-on edge is removed and its stitches are placed on a spare needle. The final round is then grafted to these provisional cast-on stitches using Kitchener stitch, with careful attention paid to the offset positioning that creates the half twist. All ends are woven in and the finished piece is blocked to the specified measurements.
