Universal Yarn Glider Shawl

What is Being Made

The Glider Shawl is an unusually shaped knitted wrap designed to drape elegantly around the shoulders. This one-size shawl features a distinctive silhouette with a wingspan of 58 inches and a center depth of 26½ inches. The shawl is specifically designed to fold at the top for extra warmth around the neck, creating a shawl collar effect that combines both style and functionality.

Techniques Used

This shawl is worked using a bottom-up construction method, beginning from the point and expanding outward. The design incorporates lace as a central design element, with a decorative lace panel adorning the center of the shawl. While the majority of the shawl is worked in garter stitch for a classic, textured appearance, the pattern includes textural borders along the edges and throughout the lace panel to create visual interest. The shawl is worked flat on circular needles, allowing for the unique shaping and construction of this wrap-style garment.

Stitches Used

The Glider Shawl employs several fundamental knitting stitches to achieve its finished design:

  • Garter stitch – the primary stitch used throughout most of the shawl, creating a reversible, textured fabric
  • Lace stitches – including yarn overs (yo) and decreases to create an openwork lace panel of 29 stitches
  • Knit stitches (k) and purl stitches (p) – used in combination to create textural borders and define the lace panel
  • Yarn overs (yo) – used to create the openwork lace pattern and increase stitches
  • Decreases – including knit two together (k2tog) and slip, slip, knit (ssk) to shape the shawl and balance yarn overs in the lace panel
  • Knit front and back (kfb) – used for increasing stitches during the shaping process

Materials

The Glider Shawl is designed to be knitted with Universal Yarn Finn, a luxurious blend yarn composed of 50% acrylic, 25% superwash merino, and 25% alpaca. This fiber combination provides durability, easy care, and softness. The pattern requires 3 balls of Universal Yarn Finn in the colorway Hyacinth, with each ball containing 50 grams and 230 yards of yarn.

The needles required are US Size 5 (3.75 mm) circular needles measuring 40 inches in length, or the size needed to obtain the correct gauge. Additional notions include a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and stitch markers to help track pattern repeats and shaping increases throughout the construction.

Gauge

The pattern specifies a gauge of 22 stitches by 36 rows over 4 inches in garter stitch. Checking gauge before beginning is essential to ensure the finished shawl meets the intended wingspan and depth measurements.
