Product Description
Valley Yarns presents 012 Newport from the Kathy Elkins Fall in New England Collection, a must-have women’s pullover knit in Brodie. The sweater showcases a fabulous color blocked hem and cuffs worked in a slip stitch rib pattern and a mock turtleneck. Newport is one you’ll love to wear and go for a relaxing stroll in the park or wear with trousers for a day at the office. The pullover is knit flat in pieces from the bottom up and then seamed. The turtleneck stitches are picked up along the neck edge and worked in the round. Valley Yarns Brodie is a silky soft cashmere yarn with a touch of extrafine Merino that works up beautifully. The slip stitch pattern is charted and written out.

Valley Yarns Newport - KE Fall in New England Collection
What Is Being Made
The Newport is a modern layering tunic sweater designed by Julie Turjoman as part of the Fall in New England collection. This pullover features a mock turtleneck and generous positive ease of 6–8 inches, making it an ideal 3-season wardrobe staple. The finished chest measurements range from 36 inches (XS) to 64 inches (4XL), accommodating a wide range of sizes. The design combines thoughtfully arranged colorblock hems with ribbed texture and subtle vertical design details, offering classic styling suitable for everything from lazy mornings to casual elegance.
Techniques Used
The Newport employs several key knitting techniques to achieve its modern aesthetic. The pullover is worked flat in two pieces—one for the front and one for the back—using back-and-forth rows rather than working in the round for the body. Seaming is used at the side seams to provide structure and shape to the garment. A distinctive design feature involves slipped stitches at the center front and center back that create faux visible center seams, adding a vertical design element that enhances the tunic's silhouette. The hem and cuffs incorporate slip-stitch rib patterning worked in contrast color stripes, creating visual interest and texture. Colorblock striping is integrated into the ribbed sections using multiple yarn colors. The sleeves are worked down in the round from drop shoulders, allowing for loose-fitting ease. The mock turtleneck completes the design, and a 3-needle bind-off is used to finish seams securely.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette Stitch: The primary stitch for the body, worked on US size 6 (4.00 mm) needles at a gauge of 20 stitches and 28 rows per 4 inches when blocked
- Slip-Stitch Rib Pattern: Used for the hem, cuffs, and mock turtleneck, worked on US size 5 (3.75 mm) needles at a gauge of 25 stitches and 28 rows per 4 inches when blocked. This pattern creates textured ribbed sections with visual depth
- Slipped Stitches: Incorporated as design elements at the center front and back to create faux visible seams that add vertical definition
- 3-Needle Bind-Off: A structural technique used to bind off and seam simultaneously for a finished edge
Materials and Yarn
The Newport is designed to be knitted with Valley Yarns Brodie, a luxurious yarn composed of 95% cashmere and 5% extrafine merino wool. This fiber blend provides next-to-the-skin softness and warmth, making the finished sweater suitable for frequent wear. The yarn is worked at 154 yards per 50-gram ball. The pattern calls for three colors from the Brodie line: the main color (MC) is Color 173 - Charcoal, requiring 7 to 15 balls depending on size; Color 170 - Cream (CC1) is used as a contrast color, requiring 1 to 2 balls; and Color 175 - Tan (CC2) is the second contrast color, requiring 1 to 2 balls. These three colors work together to create the colorblock striped hem and cuff details.
Needles and Tools
The Newport requires US size 6 (4.00 mm) circular needles in both 16-inch and 32–40-inch lengths for working the main body and sleeves. US size 5 (3.75 mm) circular needles in 16-inch and 32–40-inch lengths are used for the ribbed hem, cuffs, and mock turtleneck sections where a tighter gauge is needed. Double-pointed needles (dpn) in both sizes are alternatives for working small circumferences. An extra needle is required for the 3-needle bind-off technique. Additional materials include stitch markers to denote pattern repeats and shaping points, stitch holders or waste yarn to hold stitches temporarily, and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and seaming the side seams.
Skill Level and Pattern Format
The Newport is rated as Advanced Beginner difficulty, making it accessible to knitters with some experience who are ready to tackle techniques beyond basic stockinette and ribbing. The pattern is provided as
