Valley Yarns Starling Tank Top: A-Line Lace Sweater
What Is Being Made
The Starling is an intermediate-level knitted tank top featuring an elegant A-line silhouette with cap sleeves. Designed by Julie Turjoman, this garment showcases a graduated center lace panel that creates visual interest while the side decreases accentuate the wearer's figure. The design is flattering across multiple sizes, ranging from XS to 5XL, with finished bust measurements from 34 inches to 66 inches. The finished piece includes a crew neck and hemline both finished with a simple yet effective mini-cable detail that balances the prominent lace center panel.
Techniques Used
The Starling employs several intermediate knitting techniques to achieve its sophisticated construction:
- Seamless construction: The garment is worked seamlessly, eliminating the need for seaming pieces together after completion.
- Worked in the round: Circular needles are used to work portions of the garment in the round, creating smooth, continuous fabric.
- Lace work: A graduated center lace panel forms the focal point of the design, requiring precision in stitch placement and pattern repeats.
- Cable stitching: Mini-cables edge the crew neck and hem, adding textural contrast to the lace panel.
- Decrease shaping: Strategic side decreases create the flattering A-line silhouette and define the garment's shape.
- Bottom-up construction: The garment is worked from the lower edge upward toward the shoulders.
Stitches Used
The pattern employs fundamental and intermediate knitting stitches to create texture and shaping:
- Stockinette stitch: The primary stitch for the main fabric, providing a smooth, classic knit appearance.
- Cable stitches: Used for the mini-cable edging at the crew neck and hem.
- Lace stitches: Yarn overs and decreases create the graduated lace panel, requiring careful attention to stitch count and pattern placement.
- Decrease stitches: Knit 2 together (K2tog), purl 2 together (P2tog), slip-slip-knit (ssk), knit 3 together (K3tog), and slip-1-knit2tog-pass-slipped-stitch-over (sk2p) are used for shaping and lace pattern definition.
Materials and Yarn
The Starling is designed to be worked in Valley Yarns Leverett, a premium cotton-linen blend yarn. This fiber composition offers several advantages: the 70% Pima cotton and 30% linen blend provides crisp stitch definition that showcases the lace and cable details beautifully, while delivering excellent drape and breathability—ideal qualities for a sleeveless tank top suitable for warm-weather wear. The yarn is yardage-efficient, with each 50-gram ball containing 109 yards. Yarn requirements range from 7 balls for the smallest size (XS) to 15 balls for the largest size (5XL).
Needles and Tools
The pattern calls for circular needles in two sizes to achieve proper gauge and fabric characteristics. US size 5 (3.75 mm) circular needles in both 16-inch and 32-40-inch lengths are used for the main fabric, while US size 4 (3.50 mm) circular needles in the same length options are used for ribbed or cable edgings. The needle size may be adjusted as needed to achieve the specified gauge. Additional materials include stitch markers (with 2 in a unique color for easy identification), stitch holders for holding stitches during construction, and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends.
Gauge and Fit
The pattern specifies a gauge of 20 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch on the larger needles, measured after blocking. Achieving accurate gauge is essential for proper fit and to ensure the lace panel displays correctly. The garment is designed with 2 inches of positive ease at the bust and 4 inches of positive ease at the hips, creating a comfortable, flattering fit that accommodates various body shapes while maintaining the elegant A-line silhouette.
