Valley Yarns Eden Cardigan

What Is Being Made

The Valley Yarns Eden is an intermediate-level cardigan designed by Lidia Karabinech. This stylish, cozy cardigan is crafted from 100% cashmere yarn and features a classic button-front design with set-in sleeves and functional pockets. The finished cardigan offers a refined, wearable garment with 3–5 inches of positive ease, making it comfortable for layering or wearing as a standalone piece.

Techniques Used

The Eden cardigan is constructed using bottom-up knitting, meaning the body and sleeves are worked from the cast-on edge upward before being seamed together. The garment is worked flat on circular needles, using flat knitting rather than in-the-round construction. All pieces are seamed together after completion, creating clean, professional-looking seams that join the front panels, back panel, sleeves, and collar components.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch throughout the Eden cardigan is stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric with a distinct knit side and purl side. The ribbing at the cuffs, hem, and button bands is worked in a 2×2 ribbed pattern (alternating 2 knit stitches with 2 purl stitches), which provides stretch and helps edges lie flat. Shaping is achieved through standard decreases including knit 2 together (K2tog) and slip, slip, knit (ssk) decreases, as well as increases using Make 1 knitwise (M1k) and Make 1 purlwise (M1p) techniques. The pattern also incorporates pocket construction, with stitches placed on holders to create functional patch pockets.

Materials

  • Yarn: Valley Yarns Monadnock Bulky, 100% cashmere, 50g per 71 yards. Yarn requirements range from 13 balls (size S) to 17 balls (size XL), depending on the finished size selected. The sample shown is worked in Color 493.
  • Needles: US 11 (8mm) circular needles, 32–40 inches in length, for working the main fabric. One spare US 11 (8mm) needle is required for pocket joining.
  • Additional Materials: Stitch holders, removable markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points, and a yarn needle for seaming and weaving in ends.
  • Gauge: 11 stitches and 16 rows measured over 4 inches in stockinette stitch on US 11 needles.

Sizing and Finished Measurements

The Eden cardigan is available in four sizes: Small, Medium, Large, and Extra-Large. Finished bust measurements range from 39¾ inches (size S) to 57¼ inches (size XL), with consistent positive ease of 3–5 inches built into the pattern to ensure a comfortable, relaxed fit. The finished length is 25½ inches across all sizes, providing a classic cardigan silhouette that hits at the hip.

Skill Level

Rated as intermediate, the Eden cardigan is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are comfortable working flat on circular needles, managing shaping through increases and decreases, and seaming garment pieces together. The bulky yarn weight allows the project to knit up quickly despite its intermediate complexity.
